The melting ice in the Baltic Sea has once again sparked a heated debate about some seabirds and their destructive power.
Great Cormorants are a great concern for Finns, and an editorial (18.3.2026) in Helsingin Sanomat reinforces this concern.
The editorial, which actually deals with barnacle geese and culling regulated according to the Swedish model, is punctuated by a two-sentence passage on Cormorants:
“Hunting cormorants under a special permit should be permitted. Cormorants have managed to destroy entire islands.”
Some years ago I assembled an artistic working group with whom, between 2019 and 2022, we studied the life of cormorant colonies in the Bothnian Sea region. The result was an art exhibition around Great Cormorants, which, during their nearly 100-year absence (1900–1996), had been left without poems, songs, or other forms of artistic expression.
”Chorus sinensis” combines Jan Eerala’s videos, photos and sound recordings, Laura Naukkarinen’s composition, and the Poseidon Choir’s performance.
As the multi-year creative process unfolded in the vicinity of the birds’ nesting areas, our understanding of cormorants grew, and we were able to challenge the public outcry and the claims presented as facts regarding the destructive power of cormorant colonies.

The video is called “Elements” and it is recorded near to the cormorant colony in front of Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in 2022 and at Pohjankalliot island.

Thanks to the kind invitation by Maoya Bassiouni, director of fluxART at UC Berkeley, Climate Whirl and Periferia Forest Art Lab took part in the art&science exhibition at the Patricia Valian Reser Center for Creative Arts (PRAx) in Corvallis, Oregon. The group exhibition showcased works from fluxART artists-in-residence, the Office for Tree Migration by Agnes Meyer-Brandis, and PRAx Collaborative Faculty Fellowship from Oregon State University.
During the opening events 22-23 January, 2026, INAR professor Timo Vesala gave a cinematic lecture entitled Treebounds at the Center for the Future of Forests and Society in Corvallis.
The lecture was given for the first time during the Word for the World is Forest at Hyytiälä Forest Station in May 2024 and has since toured many places.

Miten kommunikoida puun kanssa? Tapoja lienee monia, mutta taiteilija Agnes Meyer-Brandis on kehittänyt biokemiallisen tavan luoda yhteys puihin. Sitä varten valitusta puusta analysoidaan sen erittämiä haihtuvia hiilivetyjä ja mittauksia käyttäen taiteilijan yhteistyökumppani Marc vom Ende luo puulle uniikin ”One Tree ID”-hajuveden.
Uusi One Tree ID -hajuvesi julkistetaan 11 huhtikuuta 2025, kun Meyer-Brandiksen soolonäyttely ”Kun puut vaeltavat” avataan Mäntän Serlachius-museossa. Näyttelyn kuratoi Ulla Taipale.
Videolla taiteilija ja Kaisa Rissanen, puiden ilmakehävuorovaikutusten tutkija Ilmakehätieteiden keskuksesta, Helsingin yliopistosta mittaavat Serlachius Kartanon Veistospuistossa lokakuun kirpeänä aamuna lähes satavuotiaan hopeasalavan (Salix alba) haihtuvia hiiliyhdisteitä. Saadut näytteet analysoidaan Suomen meteorologisessa instituutissa.
🇬🇧How to communicate with a tree? There are probably many ways, but artist Agnes Meyer-Brandis has developed a biochemical way to connect with trees. To do this, the selected tree is analysed for the volatile organic compaunds it secretes and, using measurements, the artist's collaborator Marc vom Ende creates a unique 'One Tree ID' scent for the tree.
The new One Tree ID perfume will be unveiled on 11 April 2025, when Meyer-Brandis' solo exhibition "As Trees Go By" opens at the Serlachius Museum in Mänttä.
The exhibition is curated by Ulla Taipale.
In the video, the artist and Kaisa Rissanen, a researcher on tree-atmospheric interactions at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences and Earth System Research (INAR), University of Helsinki, measure the volatile organic compounds of the nearly 100-year-old silver willow (Salix alba) in the Park of Serlachius Manor on a crisp October morning. The samples will be analysed in the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Chorus sinensis is an audiovisual choral work dedicated to cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis). It was produced from 2019–2022 in the coastal areas of the Finnish Bothnian Sea, where human and seabird territories overlap. The work examines this bird, which arouses strong opinions in the society, through the means of art, and asks: Is the cormorant worth a song sung by humans?

Lähellämme on puita, jotka ovat tärkeitä elämänkumppaneita.
Puut lähellämme -työryhmä alkoi vuonna 2019 tutkia, millaisia ovat suomalaisten ihmisten ja puiden keskinäiset suhteet. Yli 1700 henkilöä eri puolilta Suomea täytti vastasi työryhmän laatimaan kyselyyn ja avasi samalla puihin liittyviä muistojaan, tunteitaan ja tarpeitaankin. Tutkimuksen mukaan uhteet puihin voidaan luokitella hoivaaviin, nostalgisiin ja ihaileviin.
Puusuhteet toimivat peilinä sille, mitä ihmiset ajattelevat rakkaudesta, ystävyydestä, paikastaan maailmassa. Tietyt puut synnyttävät ihmisessä syvää kiintymystä ja iloa, rakkauttakin. Kun sellaista puuta ollaan kaatamassa, moni suomalaisista on valmis tekemään puuystävänsä puolesta mitä tahansa.
Hankkeeseen kutsuttujen taiteilijoiden, Band of Weedsin ja Sakari Piipon ääni- ja valokuvateokset antavat kyselyyn osallistuneille ihmisille ja puille kasvot, rungon ja äänen. Tutkimusaineistoon valikoitu suomalainen nykyrunous täydentää ymmärrystä siitä, miten ihmiset ajattelevat puita ja puiden kanssa.
Puut lähellämme -näyttelu on ensimmäistä kertaa esillä Kolin luontokeskus Ukossa 3.3 – 29.8.2024.
Tutkimusryhmässä ovat mukana ekologit Eeva-Stiina Tuittila ja Aino Korrensalo, kirjallisuudentutkija Karoliina Lummaa, kulttuuriantropologi Kaisa Vainio ja metsätieteilijä Tuomo Takala. Näyttelyn kuraattori on Ulla Taipale.

Chorus sinensis -näyttely on avautunut Hanasaaren Galleriassa Espoossa!
Näyttelymme on avoinna Hanasaaren merellisessä kulttuurikeskuksessa syyskuun 1 päivään, 2024 saakka. Selkämeren uljas luonto Jan Eeralan kuvaamana ja merimetsoista innoittunut Lau Naun sävellys Poseidon-kuorolle täydentyy näyttelyssä merimetsojen taidonnäytteellä, pesällä.
Merimetso on suojeltu merilintu, jonka pesiä ei saa ilman lupaa siirtää paikaltaan luonnonsuojelulain 70 §:n mukaan. Hanasaaren gallerian näyttelyssä esitettävä merimetsojen hylkäämä pesä on näyttelyssä esillä Varsinais-Suomen ELY-keskuksen poikkeusluvalla.
ELY-keskuksen perustelujen mukaan Chorus sinensis -näyttelyllä on ympäristökasvatuksellista merkitystä ja näin luonnonsuojelulain 83 §:n ehdot poikkeusluvan myöntämiselle täyttyvät opetustarkoituksessa.

Chorus sinensis exhibition was opened at Hanasaari Gallery in Espoo!
Our exhibition is open at the Hanasaari Cultural Centre until September 1, 2024. The magnificent nature of the Bothnian Sea as portrayed by Jan Eerala and Lau Nau's composition for the Poseidon Choir, inspired by cormorants, is complemented by a cormorant's masterpiece, the nest.
The Great Cormorant is a protected seabird, whose nests cannot be moved without permission under Article 70 of the Nature Conservation Act.
The cormorant's abandoned nest on display at the Hanasaari Gallery is exhibited with a special permit from the FInnish Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY).
According to the ELY, the Chorus sinensis exhibition has an environmental educational value and thus the conditions for granting a derogation under Section 83 of the Nature Conservation Act are fulfilled for educational purposes.

Kolin kansallispuistossa avataan sunnuntaina 3. maaliskuuta ”Puut lähellämme” -näyttely, jossa olen työskennellyt kuraattorina samannimisen tutkimusryhmän kanssa. Työmme tulokset ovat nähtävillä Luontokeskus Ukossa huhtikuun loppuun saakka.
Professori Eeva-Stiina Tuittilan johtama monitieteinen työryhmä yllättyi suomalaisten halukkuudesta ja tarpeesta kertoa suhteestaan omaan lempipuuhunsa: yli 1700 henkilöä eri puolilta Suomea vastasi tutkimusryhmän laatiman yksityiskohtaisen kyselyn ja avasi puihin liittyviä muistojaan, tunteitaan ja tarpeitaankin vuosina 2019-22.
”Tietyt puut synnyttävät ihmisessä syvää kiintymystä ja iloa, rakkauttakin, mutta myös huolta. Kun tärkeä puu on uhattuna, moni on valmis tekemään puuystävänsä puolesta paljon, jopa estämään puun kaatamisen keinolla millä hyvänsä.”
Näyttelyssä on esillä valokuvaaja Sakari Piipon kuvaamia puu-ihmispareja ja Band of Weedsin ääniteos, jossa kuvitteelliset puuyksilöt hakevat seuraa muista elollisista. Näyttelyssä voi kuunnella myös suomalaisten runoilijoiden puuaiheisia teoksia.
