🌸April Event🌸
We are thrilled to invite you to an exclusive SALOON studio visit to discover artist Solveig Settemsdal’s (@solveigsettemsdal ) current body of work.
Settemsdal will share with SALOON members her practice focused on developing a sculptural language that is simultaneously transient and structural, exploring processes that refuse fixity. In her works, she creates otherworldly watery, ephemeral forms held within and against more permanent architectures of metal, fabric, and glass.
After years of developing sculptural methods in water within tanks — using molecular gastronomy techniques to create membrane-bound forms from ocean-derived biomaterials — the work is now pushing outward: beyond the tank, into space, light, fabrics. Crawling out. Exploring what lasts, how long, and how.
Solveig Settemsdal (@solveigsettemsdal ) is a multidisciplinary artist working across mediums including sculpture, video, photography, drawing and sound. She was born in Norway, did her art foundation at Strykejernet Art School in Oslo and has been based in the UK since 2007. She completed a BA in Painting at the Glasgow School of Art in 2010 and an MFA in Sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art in 2018. She received the Jerwood Drawing Prize for her video work, Singularity, in 2016, the first video to win the accolade. We can’t wait to see you soon!

Make Up transforms cosmetics into membranous forms using techniques borrowing from molecular gastronomy and ocean ecology. Foundation, eyeshadow, shimmer and lipgloss become organisms that pulse and shift continuously, refusing fixity. #biomaterials #membranelife #cosmetics
Shipwreck building in Lithuania last week for #andthewindwillcarryusaway @stasys_museum - curated by @lina_albrikiene . Massive thanks to Gita, Santa and Ugna @pragiedrek for my stay and for all your support, @norwayinlithuania , Lina, Vaida, Tomas, and Renaldas at Stasys 💧✨
Stills from my residency at RIXC in Riga, Latvia earlier this year, resulting in a two channel video. Massive thanks to @rixcriga , @rasasmite , @raitissmits , @agnese.baranova , @livasilina99 and @divinoiseau 📡
During my residency with RIXC I grappled with the complexities of learning Unreal Engine - a programme for games design - and the science behind radio telescopy, finding tangible analog and visual proxies wherever possible.
In the work, a selective transcript from an Unreal Engine workshop overlays footage from the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center at Irbene, Latvia. The soundtrack is a field recording of rain hitting the decommissioned radio antenna dish at Irbene; rain forming a physical proxy for the gathering of signals from space.
Layers of reality and unreality are intertwined with a liquid interpretation of radio reception, and an unreal fern. Ferns originated some 400 million years ago. In this experiment, it is ever accelerating, splitting, eventually fully fragmenting.
