“No one had ever asked for his hand. So, one day, he asked himself. He rummaged through the medicine drawer, found an old dental ring, polished it with his breath and a corner of his shirt. Then he undressed in front of the mirror, looking at himself the way you look at furniture before taking it apart.
With trembling fingers, he carved a small hole into his flesh. There was no music, no guests, no rice on the floor.
Only the muffled sound of his own breathand a scent of disinfectant and nostalgia.
He put on his best suit and he set a table for two.: The second seat was empty, but he knew exactly who was sitting there.
Then he stood up and said his “yes.” Clear, firm— like a vertebra snapping into place. One of those yeses you can’t undo with a divorce. One of those yeses etched down to the marrow.
Since that day, he walks straighter. Not out of pride. But because the ring holds him tight from the inside. And finally, for the first time, he has someone inside whom he doesn’t feel alone.”
