The iea welcomes Stephanie Sutton (@sasmade ) to our New Media Artist-in-Residence program!
Artist Talk: Wed, Sept 17 @ 6pm
Zoom: /33pk44t7
Stephanie Sutton’s performances for the camera employ conventions of labor and ritual to complicate assumptions of discipline and destabilize virtues of self-control through the critical lenses of feminist theory, identity politics, and medical pathologies. Sutton’s work is recognized for its success in transgressing the limits of the isolated subject and redirecting self-consciousness onto the viewer. Sutton earned her MFA from University of Georgia, and her BFA at Georgia State University. She is currently Assistant Professor in Photography and Expanded Media at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Our media room exhibition - “Embodied: Art and Technology in Dialogue” includes “Fit Tech” by @sasmade
“Fit Tech” explores a cynicism for the fitness industry with modern technologies in exercise and self-portraiture. This installation doubles down on the performative aspect of working out through multiple performance actions.
Sutton says, “These trending wellness technologies are paired with software that continues my studio research into how we see ourselves through the mediation of the screen. I used face-tracking ai, a 360-degree camera, post production keyframing and scene selection, augmented reality and 3D scanning, and remote-control phone apps to be simultaneously in front of and virtually operating the camera. Through this process, I have recognized that the gym I am most motivated by is an artist studio – where one sweats after moving hot lights, twirls cameras to find the most interesting angle and fills a stock tank with hundreds of pounds of ice.”
Experience the full piece at RoCo now through May 10.
“Embodied” is presented in partnership with The Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University and you can watch our recent artist discussion with Slinko, Stephanie Sutton, Zorica Čolić and curator Myles Calvert on our website!
