So honoured to share that I was the recipient of this year's Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for Outstanding Choreography, Fight, & Intimacy Direction for the Fight & Intimacy Direction of Brick Shithouse! Brick Shithouse was an incredibly special show brought to life by a powerhouse team. The fight and intimacy choreo was the result of the magic that ALL these artists brought to the show. To quote my speech: above all, thank you to the cast for being the best fight club a gal could dream up, for your sensitivity and care for each other, for taking every idea I threw at you and sprinting madly away with it and turning it into something so beautiful and fucked up I never could have imagined it. The Paddy Crean, for those who don't know it, is roughly a week in Banff spent immersed in stage combat, intimacy, stunts, HEMA, and community. Bard on the Beach 2023 season The shows are open! What a marathon the past few months have been! Full of wrestling, warfare, knife fights, riots, blood, eyeballs, cannons, singing, dancing, and the list goes on... Joining Bard for the first time as Assistant Fight Director to FD/choreographer/old pal @jonohp for As You Like It, Julius Caesar, AND Henry V was so much FUN. It's a rare treat in the fight world to get to work as a team - being able to support another (stellar) FD's work was both wildly affirming of my own work, & a fantastic way to keep growing. Add in all the laughs, stabs, & nerding out in between fights, and you got yourself a great start to the summer. Working with 3 massive shows, including two large companies of actors, what stood out to me over and over was the level of respect, kindness, & collaboration across the board. I came out with so much friendship & connection to this new-to-me community, and so much love for the wonderful artists involved. Congrats to each & every person involved (and wow there are a lot of us), we made some killer shows! Last & absolutely not least, thank you again to Jono for bringing me into Bard with guns (& knives & wooden swords) ablazing - I couldn't imagine a warmer welcome.
