I’ve had a fascination with Mahler’s music for a long time now, there is something deeply personal and spiritual about his writing that draws me to it. This cycle is particularly so as he wrote the texts himself, perhaps in response to a heartbreak in his own life. This song, the third of four, is the dramatic climax, and one of the more powerful expressions of loss and despair in the repertoire. The first line translates as “I have a burning knife in my breast” and the song closes, after hearing “her silvery laugh”, that “I wish I would never open my eyes again”. I hope you enjoy!

Sam is an amazing baritone currently based in San Francisco, where he is an Adler Fellow with @sfopera 🤩 He wanted a website to support his transition into the freelance world, especially with his exciting announcement of joining the @quintanaartists roster! He was looking for something polished and cool yet still approachable and easygoing, and he wanted nods toward his various interests and passions (did you know he’s an avid recitalist?!) throughout the site. Cool blues chosen to complement the SF skyline and a blocky yet artistic sans serif help us set a balanced, confident, and effortless tone.
