A new piece of mine ‘Song for becoming’ is out now as part of Sky Will Learn Sky, a compilation of sound, poetry and language art created and curated by Deep Strawberry @end____less____lee 🍓out on cassette and digital on @coneshapetop 🤍 : “Sky Will Learn Sky creates a soundtrack for future mythology. Crisscrossing forms and modes, its multiple, temporary languages open freshly toward a contested yet consistent perceptual commonality—the sky.”
I recorded this song last summer. In responding to the sky I felt a mixture of quiet presence and giddy awe. Very appreciative of the opportunity to contribute to this project ~ it helped me start to put words to a particular feeling I’ve had since as long as I can remember 🤲🏻☁️ ~ Video is from a special moment last week off the 1.
Check out the compilation on Cone Shape Top Imprint’s Bandcamp, & come to celebrate the release this Saturday Nov 2 at @climate.control.sf I will be performing this song. Cy Ozgood and DROUGHT SPA will also perform. ⭐️ And the beautiful cassettes will be available for purchase ! 7pm doors, 8pm we start up.
The project will also be included in Climate Control’s new group exhibition opening Oct 18 and on view until Dec 10 ~ stop by to see the work in the context of a sound installation.
Some process photos from me and Brendan’s time at @audiumsf : Brendan mid-take, and a scene from our lobby install. There are still two more weekends of shows 🔊Feeling proud of this piece that we made, and wanting to share a bit more of the process 🤍
Early experiments generating acoustic feedback showed us the way ~ We set up a microphone in the center of the room and methodically recorded the feedback from each speaker at a time in the Audium space (many many speakers, of differing varieties). The recordings immediately revealed these fundamental qualities to us: inherent destinations of where the speakers want to go, and where the room wants to go. Rather than imposing other sounds onto the space, it was a way of pulling out what sounds are inherent, waiting to arise, waiting to sound. All the other sounds we added used the feedback as a guide, largely for pitch content, but also to energetically match and be in harmony with these dimensions. All the sounds were recorded in the space. Brendan and I would switch off engineering for each other (except for one section when we are playing together).
It was challenging to be inside of a process and a sound world that demanded a lotttt of patience from us when we were on a tight timeline. Tons of reflection and slowing down 🌀🌀 when it didn’t feel possible to slow down.. but I feel rly thankful for the space me and Brendan dove so deep into. It was special to devote ourselves to this world and wrestle with questions of how to be in relationship, how to trust the unfolding quality of this intrinsic behavior of the feedback, and how to find acceptance within this endless searching and unfinished quality that I think the piece still hovers in.
If you’re curious and want to hear more about the conceptual underpinnings, or any of the method/technological details of the process, there’s a lot to share!Or, process aside: I hope you come experience the piece if you’re interested. It’s been helpful to widen the lens through the sharing process so far and hear people’s responses to this work.
6 more shows to go, tix available at Audium’s site for this and next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday ✨
𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒐𝒔 by @sallydecker & @_______brendan is premiering next Thursday!
Since early August, Sally Decker and Brendan Glasson have been crafting a site-specific piece that dives deep into acoustic feedback within Audium’s one-of-a-kind space. The piece transforms into a sonic representation of the ouroboros—a snake devouring its own tail.
𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒐𝒔 is playing Thurs-Sat, September 5 through October 5 (except 9/19-21).
Get your tickets now at audium.org or follow the LINK IN BIO! 🎟️
