Some special highlights from An Evening with Sally Smart in Conversation with Alison Kubler, a radiant celebration of Smart’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵, a layered, complex works exploring and celebrating the intersection and legacies of visual art, dance and theatre, celebrating women’s creative expression.
Showing in RMOA’s Long Gallery until July 2028, Smart’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵 has been made possible through the support of the Commissioning Collective: Sally Smart Donors and the Rockhampton Museum of Art Gift Fund.

An Evening with Sally Smart's 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵💫
Guests enjoyed a table responding to 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵 under the grandeur of Smart's work in the Long Gallery before artist Sally Smart was joined in conversation by 𝘝𝘈𝘜𝘓𝘛 Editor-in-Chief and Principal at Renshaw and Kubler, Alison Kubler.
Kubler expertly touched on the layered and very complex nature of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵 with some of Smart's influences for the works shared including the bold costume and set designs of the early 20th-century dance company, Ballets Russes; Pina Bausch’s 𝘊𝘢𝘧é 𝘔ü𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 scenography; and Smart's great-aunt, the Australian expatriate painter Bessie Davidson, who travelled to Paris between 1904 and 1907 with her companion Margaret Preston to make art.
Local dancers Marnie Berry and Hannah MacDonald closed the evening with a moving and considered response to Smart's 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵, set to the original score in the works by Smart's son Jack Coventry, who draws on early 20th-century avant-garde and contemporary precedents for the composition.

Alison Kubler has over 25 years experience working as a curator in museums and galleries in Australia. Kubler worked as Arts Advisor to the Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, has held full-time curatorial positions at QUT Art Museum and Gold Coast City Art Gallery, worked as Associate Curator, University of Queensland Art Museum and in a freelance capacity developed programs for Art Gallery of South Australia amongst other institutions. Kubler is a member of the Council of the National Gallery of Australia, and an Ambassador for the Institute of Modern Art. A regular contributor to art journals and magazines on the subjects of art and fashion, she is currently Editor-in-Chief of VAULT.

Renowned Australian artist whose work explores identity, the body, and performance through large-scale textile assemblages, choreography, and collage. Her fragmented figures and cut-out silhouettes transform the space into a theatre of gestures — where femininity, politics, and myth are re-stitched into new forms of being.
Her practice has been exhibited internationally, from the National Gallery of Australia to the Kunsthalle Wien and The Drawing Center in New York.
Sally Smart took part in the exhibition-performance SIAMO TUTTI IN PERICOLO, curated by Alessandro Asciutto @_elgreco8 at the Biondo Tevere in Rome @albiondotevere_dal1915roma , marking fifty years since the death of Pier Paolo Pasolini.
