The Temple of Torn Paper [The weight of survival, built from the world’s lightest sheets] RYOHAN I refused to consume the sight of elderly people hauling discarded paper as merely a “familiar city landscape.” This work uncovers the reality of aging in Korean society a reality long ignored through the labor of those who collect paper waste. Scholars view the phenomenon of “elderly paper collectors” as a uniquely specific scene within South Korea. The reality of so many seniors surviving on the streets by gathering scrap paper is a rare case, even on a global scale. The elderly body, exhausted for a mere 5,000 KRW a day, is not a matter of “personal choice.” It is a social consequence carved out by the void of welfare and the lack of stable labor. This project does not merely gaze at abandoned paper. It questions the abandonment of old age, the erosion of dignity, and the weight of our collective social responsibility.

<이어지다> “연결된 두 세계” 다리는 두 세계를 이어주는 역할을 합니다. 서로 다른 문화와 배경을 가진 두 사람이 결혼을 통해 하나로 연결된다는 상징적 의미의 공간이기도 합니다. 마크로스크의 작품에서 영감을 받아 강원도 평창군에 있는 다리에서 결혼식을 하였습니다. 료한 결혼식 ‘이어지다’ 는 단순한 웨딩이 아니라, 자연과 사람, 그리고 시간의 흐름이 하나로 연결되는 경험 입니다. 평창의 드넓은 자연 속에서 열린 결혼식은, 화려한 호텔이나 웨딩홀이 아닌 대자연을 배경으로 신랑 신부의 이야기를 담아냈습니다. ‘이어지다’라는 이름처럼, 이 결혼식은 단절이 아닌 ‘연결’에 집중했어. 결혼이란 단순히 두 사람이 맺어지는 것이 아니라, 가족과 친구, 그리고 그들이 살아온 시간들이 한데 모이는 과정입니다. 마크로스크 작품에서 모티브한 웨딩은 평창 오대천의 물은 마크 로스코의 블루를 상징하며 그린은 자연,나무,돌로 표현한 웨이브 형태의 장식을 담았습니다. ‘이어지다’라는 이름 그대로, 사랑과 시간, 그리고 자연이 하나로 다리를 통해 이어지는 순간이었습니다. <Bridge> ”Two connected worlds“ This bridge plays a role in connecting the two worlds. 〈이어지다〉 료한 다리는 두 세계를 잇는 통로입니다. 료한의 작업 〈이어지다〉는 그 다리를 건너는 행위에서 시작됩니다. 이는 서로 다른 삶과 배경, 그리고 각자의 시간이 하나의 흐름으로 섞이는 찰나의 기록입니다. 본 작업은 마크 로스코(Mark Rothko)의 회화적 언어에서 영감을 얻었습니다. 로스코의 색면이 감정을 직접적으로 환기하듯, 이 공간에서 색은 단순한 장식이 아닌 공간의 정서(Sentiment)를 구축하는 장치로 작동합니다. 강원도 평창 오대천의 맑은 물줄기는 로스코의 ’블루‘로 투영되었으며, 숲과 나무, 돌로 이어지는 웨이브 형태의 설치물은 자연의 ’그린‘을 감각적으로 시각화합니다. 여기서 자연은 단순한 배경에 머물지 않고, 그 자체로 살아있는 하나의 존재로서 서사에 참여합니다. 〈이어지다〉는 단순히 두 사람의 결합을 넘어, 가족과 친구, 그리고 그들이 살아온 무수한 시간들이 다리를 통해 하나의 거대한 풍경으로 연결되는 경험입니다. 이 작업은 사람과 시간, 그리고 자연이 하나로 조우하는 가장 아름다운 순간을 기록합니다. Connection | RyoHan A bridge is a structure that bridges two worlds. Ryo Han’s wedding project, Connection, begins with the very act of crossing that bridge a record of the moment when disparate lives, backgrounds, and timelines converge into one. This work draws inspiration from the paintings of Mark Rothko. Just as Rothko’s color fields directly evoke raw emotion, the colors in this space function not as mere decoration, but as the very sentiment of the atmosphere. The pristine waters of Odaecheon in Pyeongchang embody Rothko’s ”Blue,“ while the lush ”Green“ of the surroundings is expressed through wave-like installations of wood and stone. Here, nature is not a backdrop; it is a living entity that breathes alongside the ceremony. Connection is more than an event joining two individuals. It is an experiential flow where family, friends, and the lived histories of each participant cross the bridge to merge into a single narrative. This project captures the fleeting moment where people, time, and nature are woven into a singular, breathtaking scene. 오늘 DDP에서 요시다 유니&김영준 사진전 VIP 데이에 초대받아 전시를 다녀왔어요. 플라워와 사진 작업하시는 분들께 특히 많은 영감을 드릴 수 있는 전시인 것 같아요. The empty cradles placed within this exhibition space are no longer sanctuaries awaiting a new birth. Instead, they have become ‘social relics‘ artifacts of closed maternity wards, shuttered elementary schools, and the traces of children who have evaporated from our cities. In this space where the cries of life have vanished, only the clinical hum of fluorescent lights and a sterile silence remain. Through the repetitive procession of empty cradles, this installation visualizes the ‘unborn future’ we have long ignored and the stark landscape following a demographic collapse.

<물들다> 무채색이던 두 사람이 만나 서로의 세계를 채워가기 시작합니다. 함께하는 시간 속에서 그들은 세상의 다양한 색을 발견하고, 처음 보는 풍경마다, 나누는 감정마다 새로운 색이 마음에 스며듭니다. 그렇게 두 사람은 서로에게 물들어가고, 함께한 발자국마다 사랑의 색이 번져나갑니다. 결혼의 순간, 무채색이던 세상이 비로소 온전한 컬러로 물들며, 그들의 이야기는 하나의 완성된 그림이 됩니다. 파지(破紙)의 성전 The Temple of Torn Paper [가장 가벼운 종이가 만드는, 세계에서 가장 무거운 생존의 무게] RYOHAN 나는 도시에서 폐지를 싣고 가는 노인들의 모습을 익숙한 풍경으로 소비하고 싶지 않았다. 폐지를 줍는 노인의 노동을 통해 한국 사회가 외면해온 노후의 현실을 드러내는 작업이다. 학자들은 ‘폐지 줍는 노인’ 현상을 한국 사회의 특수한 장면으로 바라본다. 이처럼 많은 노인들이 거리에서 폐지를 주워 생계를 이어가는 현실은 세계적으로도 드문 사례다. 하루 약 5,000원을 위해 소모되는 노인의 몸은, 개인의 선택이 아니라 복지와 일자리의 공백이 만들어낸 사회적 결과다. 이 작업은 버려진 종이가 아니라, 버려진 노후와 존엄, 그리고 사회적 책임의 문제를 묻는다.
