2024 BMX Day set the bar pretty high. Thanks to everyone for making it what it is. Looking forward to seeing everyone this Sunday 7/20 for the third annual BMX Day at Gateway Green. đˇ: @brian_barnhart #bmxday
Third annual BMX Day at Gateway Green is coming up on Sunday 7/20. It is likely going to be another hot one, so weâre doing it in the late afternoon/evening to wait for shade and weâll have plenty of drinks on ice.
A couple rad additions to the event this year, @odysseybmx will be keeping yall stoked with some prizes. And, bike works by p:ear will be joining us with bikes for kids to use and a limited supply of helmets for those in need. So, bring your friend if they donât have a bike or helmet. Weâre trying to make sure as many people can enjoy bikes as possible.
As always, all wheels are welcome.

Kathy impacted so many lives for the better, in BMX and beyond. I have carried this story with me for years. (Literally 20+ years, so if you know it and there are some inaccuracies, please correct me) I *think* this is the moment BMX clicked for her and went on to change a lot of our lives.
Kathy, after a recent Target reorg, had landed in a new role. She inked Targetâs sponsorship of Shaun White, Nate Adams, and the Hoffman bikes team, and went to Woodward to spend some time with the team and learn about BMX.
âWhy should I care?â she asked. This might sound like a callous question, but she was never not direct (or genuinely curious). Kevin Robinson asked her to come to the vert ramp and watch a session. Kevin knew that a young rider was working on dropping in on the vert ramp for the first time ever. This is a rite of passage, as it is one of the scariest things a rider can do. A small crowd started to gather around to watch. After some encouragement and multiple run ups the young rider finally rolled in and was swarmed by a sea of friends and fellow riders. Kevin said, âNot everyone can win the XGames, but everyone can experience that same feeling.â
Kathy took that energy wherever she went. She encouraged, challenged, and always lifted her people up. She wanted everyone to feel that feeling.
My nomination for @bmx TROTY is Brian Barnhart. Why? Brian lets his shovel, photography, and actions speak his piece. Knowing this honor is not a lifetime achievement award, it is important to acknowledge that Brian has selflessly devoted himself anywhere he has put roots down. He has demonstrated this for decades. His labor and expertise @gatewaygreenpdx the past couple years, and especially on the new lines this year is unmatched. On the bike, I could watch his effortless eastern PA style all dayâyou know it when you see it. He doesnât even do the âgram anymore, so Iâll have to text him this so he knows he got my vote (ps- reminder to build up jumps AND your friends). He likely wonât think much of it and change the subject to talk about his plans on which jump heâs dialing next. đ¸ @markrphoto
Ryanâs bike captured my attention from the first glance, there was just something about the way he talked about it and the conversations we had about that intricate nature of cycling led me towards trying to decipher everything that makes it so⌠real?
Builder: Hufnagel Cycles @jordanhufnagel
âOrigin storyâI was Jordanâs bike assembler and wheel builder. He built me this bike as his entry for the 2009 Oregon Manifest Constructorâs Challenge bike show, which is a very sweet concept for a custom bike show where the bikes are judged brand new, put to the test on a challenging course, then inspected once again to see how everything performed.
Why is this âTHEâ bike for me? The form, function, and feeling I get when I ride this is unlike any other bike. There have been so many people involved with every aspect of this bike. It connects me to those people and memories every time I ride it. Favorite detail about the bikeâIâm not a fan of overt branding. There is a little brass dot on the fork crown with my initials which is easy to miss but unique and special to me.â
If you want to check out this bike in person, then head on over to the @made.bike show and drop by the @cycleoregon booth!
The first in this new series. Frame, Fork, Rider is an attempt to capture the intricate bond between the rider and their bike.

Yesterday was BMX Day. I celebrated by planning an event for the community to come together. Young, old, former pros, future pros, families, beginners to bike-lifersâall were there, and all were stoked. Today I was reminded why Iâve volunteered my time, money, and labor to this park since 2016 when my friend Brian, who came out with his son last night to celebrate his first ever BMX Day, sent me the text you see above.
If youâve made it this far, do me a favor. If you rode gateway green yesterday, drop a comment/emoji about your experience and tag your friends who you were there with you. #BMXday #thankyouBMX #gatewaygreen #friendsofgatewaygreen
Thanks for the post and memories @modebmx I had never seen this photo before. #repost @modebmx

Ever hung out with your heros? BMX is special like that. And as it turns out, most of those heroes are there for a reason. They inspire you, push what is possible, and the great ones make you feel welcomeâno matter your skill, setup, or style. Dave made you feel welcome. There was no reason he shouldâve remembered our names, but he did every time. He wanted to ride with us, and learn with us, and push us. Thank you for everything Dave, we miss you. đˇ my dad @stbarrett99 Circa 1996(?) Greenville, NC PLAY/Useless contest at the OG Jaycee park.
