New York, New York, join us in supporting RunWithMaud 5k run/walk this Saturday, May 6th.
If you want to join, come run/walk with us (@DefineNewYorkRunClub , @RunningToProtest ) at Dick & Jane’s, 266 Adelphi Street, Brooklyn, NY 11205 in Fort Greene. Doors open at 8am (walk/run begins at 8:30am) or do your own thing virtually. The official event will take place in Atlanta, Georgia held by @AtlantaTrackClub , so we’re all be participating virtually anyway. Whichever you choose, don’t forget to register as the proceeds goto helping his mother build the @AhmaudArberyFoundation which is all about helping young Black boys get the mental health tool they need.

We gathered on June 19th for the Two-Year Anniversary of Running To Protest. Since the summer of 2020 we've run to bring light to a variety of injustices and causes our group feels passionate about. At times attendance rose to thousands and in other months we've had tens of folks join us. The number has no bearing on how much effort and love goes into planning these protests. As Coffey often says, if even one person leaves learning something and sharing it with others we've done our job.
This Juneteenth Power started us off with an excellent history of the holiday, reminding us of the colored Union regiments (United States Colored Troops - USCT) who fought in and helped end the Civil War. In many ways June 19, 1865 wasn't just the announcement of General Order No. 3 proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas, it was the natural end of the Civil War.
We were also in the middle of Pride Month and RTP team member Alex (@alexpkbk ) shared her coming out story, providing 3 reasons we still need Pride even though many sodomy and discrimination laws are no longer in place. (continued in comments)

We've rarely revisited a topic over the past 2 years but knew we had to shine a light again on gun violence awareness. Whether it's in our home city of New York or repeatedly being featured on the nightly national news, gun violence is rampant across this country.
This month we learned from LES community members Sam Jacques and Terron Lemons, who have both been directly affected by gun violence and are using their influence to provide safe space, activities, and mentorship to the youth right here in NYC. NY State Senate candidate Keagan Mays-Williams reminded us that mass shootings account for only 1% of the gun violence we see across the country and we lose 110 Americans to gun violence every single day. She urged each of us to keep the pressure on our representatives to make sure they aren't just investing resources when gun violence is high.
We also heard from RTP teammates at Foley Square about how the leaked SCOTUS Roe v. Wade decision will affect so much more than just abortion and so many of us in so many ways, including privacy, gay marriage, contraception, inter-racial marriage, and more. All of us in the running community, and especially those male voices, need to publicly and vocally demonstrate our support.

On April 10, surrounded by unconditional love and the warmth of acceptance, we shut down the Brooklyn Bridge alongside @puzzlelife.voicepg2 to show support for the Autism Community.
It’s hard to put into words what was felt by everyone there. Every day, members of the Autism community battle stigmas, stereotypes, accessibility (in all capacities), and so much more. This walk taught us about awareness vs acceptance, brought people together to share in the struggles, the love, the support. And most importantly, it provided an opportunity for members of the Autism community to have a space where they didn’t have to worry about anything society imposes onto them. They could just be.

This Sunday, we’ll discuss and learn why acceptance (not awareness!) is what’s needed most, not only from allies, but society at large.
