Meet the artists in this year’s NOW Festival, held over three weekends in November! Divya Victor, Carolyn Chen, and AMOC* present “Thresholds” November 11–13.
Composer and CalArts faculty Carolyn Chen reconfigures the everyday through music. She collaborates with Tamil-American poet, essayist, and educator Divya Victor along with an ensemble integrating Western and Carnatic music crafted with development support by American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*).
In “Thresholds,” Carolyn Chen presents a musical adaptation of poems from Divya Victor’s books KITH and CURB, which explore immigrant experiences of arrival, assimilation, and loss.

This summer, The American Modern Opera Company (@runningamoc ) brought a bold slate of opera, dance, and music to campus in a series of both spectacular and intimate performances. Check out these highlights from the Run AMOC* Festival #SummerForTheCity!
Your last chance to see @aucoincomposer ’s Music for New Bodies on the east coast will be at @tanglewoodmusicfestival on August 7! @runningamoc
Our performances at @lincolncenter were really special. I was grateful to share the stage with my fellow singers @songhee_lzy@meganmooremezzo@paulapplebytenor@evanbenhughes . This piece pushes the boundaries of what an opera is and what opera can be in the 21st century- and critics agreed!
“The voices commanded the attention- sometimes nearly spoken, sometimes solo or in group harmony.” -Bachtrack
“Throughout the work, the five singers take turns or combine to voice the character, and here their interplay creates hallucinatory effect.” -Blogcritics
“The soloists…writhed on the floor while impressively delivering a haunting message that condemned consumerist forces.” -San Francisco Classical Voice
“The singers fully committed to the business, and, even more importantly, to the music. The vocal texture was dominated by delicious ensemble writing” -Parterre Box

We're still thinking about @runningamoc 's The Comet/Poppea, which fused Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea (1642) with W.E.B. Du Bois’s short story The Comet (1920).
With a stellar cast featuring AMOC* members @alsoanoperasinger and @arcostanzo , this work and @mi2lien 's rotating set had us SPINNING. 🤯😍
#godzilla danced a duet at @lincolncenter@and introduced herself to some strangers then @runningamoc with @eichterling_ ran #amok . Then indoors at the @metopera I saw a giant painting of #mobydick …
moments to ponder conquering beasts
Hmm what does it mean??
Happy opening to the Music For New Bodies family! I’m so excited to be part of this wonderful piece by @aucoincomposer and even more excited to share it with the audience in New York today at @lincolncenter . Thank you to @runningamoc for these photos- swipe to see me and my four incredible cast mates in a rainbow of light 🌈
@meganmooremezzo and I were messaging yesterday after rehearsal and she said that one of the movements in particular felt like a trust exercise. I’m so struck with how much that resonated with me. This piece is an altogether exercise in trust: how we trust in the music, how we trust our colleagues and community and how we learn to trust in ourselves. It requires us to do the work and prepare, but when the time is right, make the leap.
“A leap from one sort of being, one sort of being
immaterial to another.”
- Cryo, Jorie Graham
