We were thrilled to celebrate the Elephant Hill Trail Opening this past Saturday! Community members explored the new trail with local naturalists using the bilingual Elephant Hill Nature Guide, shared ideas through a community survey, and learned more about local conservation efforts in El Sereno. RPOSD awarded $700,000 in Proposition A funding to support the acquisition and preservation of open space at Elephant Hill, along with trail construction, public access improvements, and signage. We look forward to seeing how community feedback may help shape future land protections, habitat restoration, and nature-based stormwater solutions. Congratulations to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority @mrcaparks and Save Elephant Hill @saveelephanthill on this exciting milestone! #RPOSDgrantfundingatwork #grantfundingforopenspace #weallneedparks #parksmakelifebetter

🌿A new chapter for Elephant Hill🌿 Today we celebrated the opening of the Elephant Hill trail access — a long-awaited public victory for community and public open space in Northeast LA. This moment wouldn’t be possible without the decades of dedication, organizing, and advocacy from Elva Yanez, Hugo Garcia, and the Save Elephant Hill coalition. Their commitment, persistence, and hard work have protected one of the last remaining open space hillsides in the Eastside for generations to enjoy. 💚 Proud to have supported this effort — with @rposd providing $700,000 to @MRCA for the trail development. Now, the community, for generations to come, can explore, connect, and take in the beauty of Elephant Hill. This is what people-powered change looks like. 🙏🏽🫶🏽✊🏽 #SAVEElephantHill #ElSereno #PublicSpace #CommunityPower #NortheastLA ParksForAll OpenSpace EnvironmentalJustice

After two years of work, our Betty Dearing Trail restoration project will soon come to an end. 💚 Since 2024, we’ve worked with thousands of volunteers to restore and maintain this popular trail next to our park, which serves as a critical community space for hikers, bikers, students, and wildlife. At our more than 200 “Betty” volunteer events, we’ve cleared 220 cubic yards of invasive plants along the 0.25 mile of the trail that we’re in charge of, installed 4,151 in native plants including grasses, annuals, forbs, shrubs, and 315 native shade and fruit trees, and built 124 stairs over 5 high priority areas people would fall at regularly. We even discovered and cleaned up a secret bench (pictured here)! Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who helped us improve the biodiversity, climate resilience, and natural beauty of our park by participating in this project. We can’t wait to watch the things we planted together keep on growing for years to come. 🌱

The Heritage Park Play Island has served the community since it was first dedicated on March 6, 1977.
