Had a beautiful conversation with @immanuel.wilkins last night at @sfjazz .
Thanks to everyone who came out, or watched online. Thanks to Immanuel for his openness.
Heās an artist in residence this season and here all week. Tonight is the world premiere of his new commissioned work āRecitations.ā And then he performs with his band and sax legend David Murray the rest of the weekend.
One of those exceptional weeks at SFJAZZ, you canāt go wrong.
Also shout out to @verbavictoria for these photos and clips.
Happy birthday to Ross Eustis, who has been a core Jazz Mafia figure for over a decade, bringing his unique trumpet sound and contributing many futuristic compositions to the Jazz Mafia catalog.
In related news, Ross recently got engaged to his longtime and awesome partner, Carolyn. So much to celebrate.
What an honor to chop it up with @michaelleagueplaysmusic last night at our @sfjazz Listening Party, talking about his four-night residency at SFJAZZ this weekend, collaborating, tennis, David Crosby, lyrics vs music, his unique approach to video, and much more. Clips coming soon! We live streamed it, and the full talk will be available on SFJAZZ At Home next week.
Thank you @verbavictoria for the photos! Thanks to Gaby Armand for the opportunity!
Brass Magic is back at Madrone Art Bar!
Tuesday, January 27, 2026
9:30pm-12:30am, no cover
For years, Brass Magic had a weekly residency at Madrone Art Bar in San Francisco. It's been some time since, and the band is in town to run it back once more.
All donations will be going directly to Oscar Myers, a San Francisco-based musician who's been playing at Madrone for over a decade. In October 2025, Oscar suffered a stroke and faces a long road of medical treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing care. These donations will be going towards:
Immediate and long-term rehabilitation therapy
Medical expenses
In-home care and mobility support
Transportation for medical appointments
Everyday living costs
For more info about Oscar and if you'd like to donate online, please visit the GoFundMe page in our bio.

Got back from NYC a week ago and finally found a moment to look back through some of the photos and videos. @sfjazz sent me out for #jazzcongress to speak on a panel, but I also caught dozens of concerts between Winter Jazz Fest, Unity Fest, GlobalFEST, APAP showcases and just normal gigs happening. A friend calls it āthe Super Bowl of Jazzā ⦠my first time out for it all, but I get it! I plan to be back next year! What fun and crazy week!
Iām New York bound next week! Iām speaking on a fun panel at #JazzCongress 2025, which is happening at @jazzdotorg on Jan. 8-9. Thisāll be my first time in NYC for the Jazz Congress, APAP, Winter Jazz Fest, Unity Fest, globalFEST marathon. If youāre gonna be at any of these, hit me up! Specifics on the Jazz Congress panel below:
Thursday, January 9
10:30 ā 11:30 am

I donāt often post tributes, but this one really hurts. 73 is too young for tabla master #ZakirHussain. Rest in peace, maestro!
Someone Vijay Iyer aptly called āone in a BILLIONā when we honored Zakir with an SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. What a night that was! Zakir hung late too!
Zakir was so cool and kind and patient with a younger me at @sfjazz - allowing me to interview him several times and always engaging with me at board meetings and strategy sessions (yup, Zakir was on the SFJAZZ board and somehow found time to attend meetings).
He really knew how to LISTEN!
Zakir might be the greatest tabla player the world ever sees. But it never felt like that was important to him. He was a lifelong student of the music, and was always seeking to learn. To me, this also explains why he was such a great collaborator and could find common ground with musicians from every corner of the world.
The video clip above is just a short excerpt of an interview we filmed with Zakir in 2016 when he was a Resident Artistic Director at SFJAZZ. I always loved this āfast flowing riverā metaphor Zakir used for learning from a master. Zakir was one of the widest, deepest, fastest and most open rivers in music history.
Thanks for reading my tribute. I really look forward to hearing more memories and tributes from all the musicians and people Zakir touched.
Another Summer, another trip up to San Juan Island. Back in the Bay now. Excited for gigs and hangs!
