Over the past 12 months, @irishsailing has been reviewing handicap and rating options through its Handicapping & Ratings Working Group (HRWG), working in conjunction with @icra_cruiserracing . Following consultation with sailors and clubs across the country, the review highlighted demand for a simple and cost-effective measurement-based rating system that could operate alongside existing club handicaps for boats without IRC certificates. ⛵ We hope that you have enjoyed a good season’s racing this year. IRC and YTC rating applications for 2025 are now closed to allow us to complete annual maintenance and testing. 𝗜𝗥𝗖 2026 application will open during the week commencing 5th January 2026. UK holders of 2024 and 2025 IRC certificates will receive an email from us to confirm when the application portal is open. For your 2026 application there will no additional information required to produce your rating next year, but the latest news item on our website homepage contains some useful links to help you prepare for revalidation and next season's racing (homepage link in bio). Important update on Storm Jibs ⚡️ As of 25 November 2025, World Sailing has adopted an urgent rule change to the Offshore Special Regulations: a storm jib may no longer be flown together with any other sail in front of the mast. The intent is to preserve the function of the storm jib as a dedicated heavy-weather sail, not a performance sail. For boats that previously used their OSR storm jib as a staysail or in combination with another sail, this may affect their declaration of the number of headsails carried for IRC Rating. One standout performance came from SailFish, skippered by Oli Hawkins and crewed entirely by sailors under the age of 25. SailFish’s success is a perfect example of the Generation JOG programme, which supports and encourages younger sailors to get offshore racing experience, providing guidance, mentorship, and access to prizes and equipment to help new talent develop.
