More than 100 Indigenous youth from 11 First Nation and Inuit communities across Canada came together at the Tim Hortons Foundation Camp in Brant, Ontario, for an intensive week-long dance camp led by Outside Looking In.
After months of training from their home communities, many participants met in person for the very first time building connections through movement, culture, and creativity. The week wrapped with a live performance in Toronto, where hip-hop and Indigenous culture took center stage.
#RUFMembers @lapir0 and @knewmphoto are ready to document the inaugural @torontotempo game.
Can’t wait to see the moments you create and the energy you bring to this historic opener!
In today’s @globeandmail , #rufmember @gjohnjournalism takes us deep into Canada’s Far North where reporting isn’t just about storytelling, it’s about endurance. This reporting matters. It sheds light on remote regions, the people who live there, and the realities of climate, sovereignty, and life in the Arctic.
So wonderful to hear that our current cohort mentee @knewmphoto has been honoured as a recipient of this year’s @canadianjournalismfoundation Tom Hanson award. Amazing work Keito. Also a shoutout to Keito’s mentor @spencesphotography who was a 2020 mentee and also a past recipient of this award. Let’s make Room.
Congrats to Room’s @katherinekycheng and @bysidnaidu on being selected to the Masters in Sustainability Studies at Trent University. Room is partnering with Trent University and the @climatedisasterproject to fully fund two MAs positions. They will be studying and working on audio/visuals related to environmental visuals and the Climate Disaster Project.
In today’s post, we introduce you to #RUFmember Keito Newman @knewmphoto , a freelance photographer based in the Ottawa–Gatineau area with an interest in documentary, news, portrait, and sports photography. He is motivated by the opportunity to create visual work that communicates impactful stories and helps people connect to the world around them.
“The Room Up Front program has given me the skills to dive into the freelance visual journalism world with confidence. At every step, I’ve been encouraged to push myself beyond my comfort zone and hold myself to a higher standard. As a new face in a complicated industry, my relationships through RUF have allowed me to ask more of myself, knowing I have a community standing right behind me. Over the past few months, I’ve accomplished many of my long-term goals—including working for The Globe—thanks to the continued support of my mentor and community members who have shown constant interest in developing strong and diverse visual storytellers.”

“I think as visual journalists it’s good to write to the video/photos you capture. For me, this was an exercise in weaving all the text, photos, and videos together - while keeping in mind that most of the readers are going to see the story on their phones (pro tip, we need more square and vertical crops) Capturing video/photos for the tiny mobile screen is still a work in progress that I’m wrapping my head around but the only way to get better at it is to try it and see what works - Through this process there were times I caught myself focusing on the gaps I missed but don’t beat ya self up over it if it doesn’t work, just gotta apply what you learned on the next story.”

Earlier this month, dozens of Texas House Representatives left the state to prevent Republican lawmakers from redrawing congressional districts in their favor. Representatives from across the country, including Texas, gathered in front of the Massachusetts State House on the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act to speak out in protest. Despite strong opposition, the new congressional map was approved by the Texas Senate last week.
Congrats Lucy’s on her first assignment for @texas_tribune ! ✨

“As a video journalist stepping into sports photography, I was already out of my comfort zone, then my long lens started acting up right before the game. Stressful, but a reminder that growth comes from taking risks, adapting fast, and learning under pressure.
Grateful for the challenge and excited to keep pushing for stronger frames.”

Shoppers browse the clothing racks at Wildlife thrift store in downtown Vancouver, which opened its doors in 1997 and expanded to Toronto in 2022 after its success in B.C. Owner Karla Ahlqvist said her business has been totally unaffected by tariffs, and, if anything, business has boomed — though she’s unsure if tariffs are the cause as they’ve also witnessed rising interest in circular fashion.
