CABARET LOULOU PRESENTS A DANCER ON THE EDGE OF A solo performance by Rolly Dib A Dancer on the Edge Of is a performance fabulation that takes the audience through an obstacle-ridden exploration toward the making of a fictional cabaret shaped by the major eras of Raqs Sharqi and the women who transformed it. An homage to the legends such as Tahya Carioca, Nadia Gamal and Dina, the work draws from their styles, movements, and vocabularies, which become the language of the performance itself. The score combines archival Arabic film music and contemporary electronic soundscapes composed by Sary Moussa. The performance weaves dance, film, and video projection into a shifting entanglement of memory and imagination. Cabaret Loulou is born in the imaginary: a space driven by the need and desire to dance freely. In this imagined world, women’s bodies are free. Free from the male gaze. From Orientalist expectation. From perfection. From containment within youth. Loulou, an alter-ego cabaret dancer, inhabits spaces the artist could not, or was not allowed to. She is free to move, to age, to explore, to express, and to dance on her own terms. There’s a memory from my childhood that keeps coming back to me. I was around 9 years old at my parents’ friend’s house. يلا قومي رقصي (Come on, stand up and dance for us) So I did. The way one of the gentlemen looked at me; it’s hard to describe. It made me conscious of myself. That I was dancing. I felt shy about it. I always think about this look and how it must have marked me. Why is it that when I danced at parties in Lebanon, there was always this mix of discomfort and admiration? Why has this dance form disappeared from our current cultural reality? It used to be huge until the 90s in Lebanon. Why is it so big internationally but in Lebanon it’s kind of 3eib? “A chaque fois que je danse un regard me hante” #baladi #raqssharqi #danceasinquiry #Lebanon #dance

✨ Oriental Dance Workshop with @rollydib ✨ 🗓️ Saturday, December 13 | 3:30–6:00 PM 📍 Houna Center, Hamra Can’t wait to share this new Lebanese hit that’s been on loop in my head. It’s a slow, expressive song with soft, gentle moments — and others that rise with more intensity and life. This workshop is inspired by Mahmoud Reda, the legendary choreographer who founded the Reda Troupe and shaped the modern vocabulary of Oriental dance. His beautiful sense of flow and musical storytelling guides our work. We’ll explore arabesques, turns, and technique while keeping the movement grounded, expressive, and joyful. Open to all levels. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and yourself. 🎶 Technique • Choreography • Joy 📱 Register: +961 3 676 285

Cacao, Movement & Support Fridat, November 21 6:30–9:00 PM Humm Studio, Beirut In times like these, when so much feels chaotic, how do we navigate this uncertainty? Where do we find grounding, connection, support? We’ll begin with a cacao circle to ground and open ourselves gently to what’s here. Then we’ll move together through practices inspired by Dance Movement Therapy; a space to feel, release and reconnect, while exploring how we find support. ✨Come as you are. No dance experience needed. ______________ About Rolly Rolly Dib is a dancer, filmmaker, and Dance Movement Therapy practitioner from Lebanon. Through this lens, she engages with the dance’s histories and stereotypes while opening space for the body as a site of self-knowledge and transformation. Her current projects include Cabaret Loulou (in development, AFAC-supported), Archivos de Danza Baladi, and the award-winning film Al Deek. She teaches Baladi workshops in Lebanon, creating space to deepen technique while exploring femininity, playfulness, and freedom in the body. She is completing her Master’s degree in Dance Movement Therapy at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
