Not all kōrero sits the same across Aotearoa, and this one comes from Te Moana-a-Toi, the Bay of Plenty, named after the ancestor Toi-kai-rākau. A coastline rich in kai, where the relationship between tangata and moana has been lived through generations.
When it came to kōura, it wasn’t always about the pots we see today. For many, it began with the hands. Low tide, calm conditions, moving along the rocks, feeling into crevices where kōura would sit hidden.
Alongside that, there were intricate traps made from what the whenua provided.
Harakeke was woven into kete-like forms, sometimes shaped with a narrow opening so kōura could enter but struggle to leave. These could be supported with mānuka, bound with kareao, and weighted with stone to hold them in place amongst the reef. Everything natural, everything returning back to the taiao over time.
Inside, bait did the calling.
Fish heads, frames, shellfish, even older bait with a stronger smell were used to draw kōura in. Nothing wasted, just used differently.
In the early 1900s, much of this mahi was still done using waka, moving with the coastline rather than against it, keeping close connection to the moana and the land.
As time moved on, things began to shift.
This is when export really took off. Kōura became a high-value export product, especially to the United States and Japan. The Bay of Plenty became part of a wider commercial fishery, and with that came purpose-built boats, pots, and processing systems becoming the norm.
These tāruke kōura weren’t mass-produced or standardised. Each one reflected the hands that made it, the environment it was going into, and the knowledge behind it.
This is kōrero from Te Moana-a-Toi, and like all things, practices may vary depending on hapū and whānau traditions.
