“By the Time the Light Reaches You, It’s Already Dead” will be showing at the Boston Short Film Festival this coming Tuesday, July 15th!
I had a great time working on this film as the Director of Photography. Visually interpreting the script - shooting, lighting, and creating an atmosphere that felt honest to the story was something I enjoyed putting a lot of care into. After years of working on several projects with my childhood friend and longtime collaborator
@calebspilios , we were excited that this one felt like one of the clearest expressions of a world that we’ve set out to create together so far.
Something I love about working on these smaller-scale independent films is having the chance to play different roles - appreciating what goes into them, and having a relationship with many parts of the process. From being a co-producer and doing what it takes to pull a low-budget film together (like wandering around, knocking on doors of random houses and office buildings asking if we could shoot there, and getting rejected a lot) — to post-production, where I mixed and mastered the audio, co-color graded the film, and got to play some guitar, rip a little glockenspiel, and somehow end up singing on Anthony’s (
@a_ddalton ) beautiful score.
Since we were kids, Caleb,
@ethan.zcharles , and I have been making these films — starting with just us or a couple other friends at a time. I don’t think any of us ever imagined how many wonderful people would eventually become part of these projects and offer their gifts and talents. This film would not be what it is without everyone involved. We are sincerely thankful.
