There is that conversation that happens way too often and feels hard to answer without a bit of cringing. When you meet someone or are introduced and they too quickly ask “what do you do?” Of course you say “I’m a photographer” (although, sometimes I offer up a different career for myself). If I give a real answer – and mostly I do – I say “I shoot objects”. Which still seems to confuse them. I see everything I shoot as an object or a composition of objects and forms.
I have always shot a lot of objects I’m drawn to for myself, simply because I love shooting objects. Exploration is the beginning, holding an object in my hands. With objects and forms, I love a bit of ambiguity, confusion, and non-importance in the sense of scale. How do I make a picture that I would be happy with, excited to see when you turn the page? A skip of the heart, or a slight intake of breath would be good.
It doesn’t always happen immediately; I also like to explore and ponder for a while, not to be slow, but to reveal and make the best picture. Often a piece of my process, I will light and shoot many different options. As a photographer, I feel there is no one way to shoot it. All I can do is be honest to myself - I am not another person! I do what I do, but I still want to be a better version of myself.

The third in this exciting series Egg and Lemon being the others. Both excellent and beautiful books.
As a young assistant working in London, I’m not even sure I realized that you could specialize in photographing fashion accessories. I had studied sciences with the intention of going to medical school. So stepping into the fashion world through photography felt completely new and exciting.
Of course, I must have known that people photographed bags, shoes, jewelry, and glasses. I started buying Harper’s Bazaar, W, French and Italian Vogue, and I saw photographers were creating incredibly beautiful images with these designer pieces.
One of the reasons I was excited to move to New York was the opportunity to focus more on shooting fashion accessories for campaigns and editorial work. When you photograph these pieces, you’re treating them like individual sculptures. They’re beautifully crafted, whether from fancy or ordinary materials, all with unique finishes. Every season brings new, exciting accessories. You get to explore the lines, color, and shape to discover their best angle or point of view. In many ways, it feels like an honor to be entrusted with such beautiful objects. I certainly develop a sense of wonder and a relationship with each one.
They may be metallic, leather, or perhaps plastic – maybe they are soft, hard, or even transparent. It is through light and shadow that you bring to life and mystery to their form. Over time, my appreciation for shooting accessories has only deepened!
