I first heard “If Looks Could Kill” by @cameraobscuraband in 2007, when it came through @kalxradio ’s new music bin. I immediately rushed out to @amoebaberkeley and bought the CD single—the perfect format at the time for listening to something on repeat (and, oh boy, I certainly did just that!). Camera Obscura had been around since the late 1990s but this was my first time really hearing them, despite my long-standing love for ‘60s girl groups and girl-group-inspired bands like Heavenly and the Shop Assistants. I had my punk/garage rock blinders on at the time, but the hypnotic intro managed to break through them anyway. Even now, the song lifts me up the second it comes on, and I immediately want to hear it again. #StillObsessed #IfLooksCouldKill #CameraObscura #ScottishIndiePop

If you’ve heard my @kalxradio show in the past few years, you’ve probably heard me play “Desidero Te” by Adriano Celentano. And chances are you’ve also heard me play the 1960s Japanese cover by the Beni Sisters, a trio of actual sisters from Tokyo. Their version was the one I heard first in 2007, thanks to the kind shopkeeper of a tiny mom-and-pop record shop in Ueno. I had wandered in and asked him (in very broken Japanese) for music from the ‘60s that sounded like Connie Francis. He enthusiastically handed me two double-disc Toshiba compilations that I’ve been listening to ever since. This was long before translation apps made Japanese accessible, so it was years before I finally knew who any of the artists were. And it took a pandemic, when we KALX DJs started recording shows from home, for me to finally look into the mystery of why a Japanese group was performing an Italian song (presumably for American troops stationed in Japan). I never actually learned the “why” but my search brought me to Italian rocker Adriano Celentano, who got his start covering American rock’n’roll hits before writing his own songs. Thanks so much to journalist @rae_alexandra_writing for joining me on @kalxradio on Monday to chat about her new book, Unsung Heroines: 35 Women Who Changed the Bay Area, and for taking us back to the ‘90s with some of her favorite songs from that era! NGL 2-hour timeslots are shorter than what I’m used to so the whole show was a blur—from the punk history lesson to learning about badass Berkeleyans smashing toilets in public long before Wendy O. Williams. Thank god for KALX’s 2-week archive (link in bio for a brief journey back in time)! 💘 I was thrilled to finally see @themccharmlys_ last night at @greatamericanmusichall after @djsidpresley turned me on to their fantastic debut album in 2023! Not only did they crush their swoonworthy girl group- & doo wop-inspired originals, they also cranked out their version of “Be My Baby” in Spanish as well as “Aqui en Mi Nube,” Sonia’s 1966 cover of “Get Off of My Cloud.” 😍 Swipe through for some photos & videos of them, plus a few snaps from our impromptu photoshoot and of @wearesadgirl and @thehighcurbs , who were also 🔥 last night. 👽 The many faces of #mosswoodmeltdown2025 😈 Although I missed Devo, Osees & all of day 2 😭, I still had a fantastic time catching the bands I did in addition to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.
