Had the great pleasure of collaborating with friends @satyandpratha on their New Day Series 2 calendar. This drawing was my interpretation of a photo they’d sent for me to reference and I couldn’t help but be drawn to that cute little offshoot peaking out from behind that rock and that proceeds are benefitting a great cause. Thanks so much for the chance to collab with you guys, and for the opportunity to be a part of your cause. ❤️

Baby’s first art show back in 2003. @mbc_1000 put me on at #thebrokendeckshow at Alena MTL. I was 21, standing in a room full of my heroes silently freaking out. Every hand I nervously shook that night was someone whose T shirt I was wearing, whose blog I followed, or whose tours I’d seen. I’m lucky enough to call a lot of those people friends today and when I see them it’s always a dap but if they ever went for a handshake, even 18 years later, I can’t guarantee it wouldn’t be a nervous one.#alenamtl #alenaskateboards #brokendeckshow

A mentor of mine @dwat has included a contribution to an initiative that he and a couple partners have started called @wefi.ghttogether in support of frontline workers in Canada during the pandemic.
It’s safe to say that I would not be doing what I’m doing today if it wasn’t for his encouragement and mentorship throughout the years. He let me tag along at conventions, involved me in the comic book studios he was a part of, and offered countless hours of constructive criticism for which I am truly, truly grateful. I will never be able to pay back this debt and I’m sure he wouldn’t ask that I do. All I can say is thank you for everything and that I will do my best to help others using the mentorship values that you have instilled in me.
A bit about the work: Early on in the pandemic I would see articles with a focus on the physical effects of PPE on doctors and nurses bodies. The one that resonated deeply for me was the mask burn, that left red streaks on the faces of these frontline workers. I thought that it was almost reminiscent of body paint and it reminded me of the face detail on my favourite manga heroine Battle Angel Alita. The parallels were easy to make as both go forth and bear the scars of the battle field but sometimes scars are badges of honour and a symbol of bravery in times of adversity. #ipadpro #procreate #applepencil
From my entry into @chenyipster Open Source Cookbook Vol.2
My dad rarely cooked at home. He spent most of his career as a chef in high end Japanese kitchens, working gruelling hours as chefs do. l think for the early part of my life I only ever saw my dad by the light of dawn or through the light in the crack of my bedroom door as we fell asleep for the night.
In lieu of a babysitter he would bring me down to the restaurant “Honjin” in the Village by the Grange where I would mostly huck rocks into a pond in the courtyard. Every now and then though, they’d peel back the Noren and let me into the kitchen. I can only appreciate the ingredients in retrospect. I was surrounded by fresh seafood at a time when all I really wanted was cinnamon toast for every meal but I remember beautiful Tetris stacks of white styrofoam, their contents waiting to be scaled, gutted, and sliced under a Yanagiba. There were boxes of Shako when that was still being served as a regular part of a sushi set in Toronto, and if I was really lucky I’d be allowed to clean the lungs out of the soft shell crabs, so that they could be deep fried and ingested without someone choking to death at the bar. It was a wonderful world of culinary possibility, a world that I would press my father into bringing back home with him. Most of my pleas would go unnoticed. He once asked me what I wanted for my 18th birthday and I said “All I want, is for you, to COOK.” He handed me a hundred bucks and said take your friends to Chuck E Cheese (which was fine with me because their Pizza was bangin)Every now and then though for reasons that I can’t begin to justify, he would break out the big guns and stunt on us all. I don’t know if it was a flash moment of creativity, a deep craving he had to satiate, or just the need to remind us once in awhile that he could cook his ass off. Wherever the inspiration came from, those meals would stay with me long after he was gone.
People say that food is universal, it brings us together, it unifies us. I believe that it’s all of those things, but I also believe that it’s a way to celebrate those that can’t be here with us today and to maybe…maybe, even have a meal with them.

Here’s some process work behind the 2015 @barneysny holiday mascot that I designed. We went through a ton of fun iterations of our little guy before settling on the final image. AD @boygirl and the Barney’s team made it one of the best professional working experiences I’ve ever had. Scroll through to see the progression.
