Moments from ‘A MEANINGFUL ORDER’ The title of which refers to a quote by Victor Papernek, who in 1965 cut through the layers of commodified artifice to seek awareness and instigate criticality, said “Design is a conscious and intuitive effort to impose meaningful order”. His insistence on design as a mode of understanding the world, of creating both tangible and intangible entities that meaningfully transform and enable us, is an inspiring reminder that design is a vehicle to ask questions and push boundaries. To enquire about the discourse of design is not an easy task. In a discipline that has increasingly become co-opted and commodified by the ever-turning wheels of commerciality and a perpetual appetite for service-lead marketing approaches, there is often a sense that we are marginalised in our pursuit of critical thinking and meaningful social engagement. By taking this exhibition as an opportunity to initiate a conversation there is the possibility that we can encourage a crucial debate and offer hope. Gratitude always to Oliver (OK) and Michela (Zoppi) and Ali (Gerber) who remain invaluable to this project in so many ways alongside Harri, Paul, Chloe, Barnaby, Lara, Anna-Lena and Gaia from our studio and Mei, Mao, Yang, Xinyi and the whole team at X sign who offered us endless generosity while working tirelessly to make this possible, and lastly our collaborators, commissioners and colleagues past and present. It explores the potential and essential interrelationships of the body, sound, space and motion, in which no art form is held above another. It contains seven parts, each made up of choreographic phrases and musical embellishments. These elements appear and disappear in a dynamic composition. It is a score that generates unlimited performances, a machine for meaning and form that must run its course.

Back to Tokyo on route to Kyoto

Now more than ever it is important that we approach all that we do with an ethos of harmony, humility and care, and this project has felt like such a celebration of togetherness. ‘Finding Form’ is a film that introduces Goldwin 0 and the creative process that brings it to life.
