Like an Idol
The project Like an Idol offers an intimate look into the world of a group of Mexican teenagers passionate about K-pop.
Set in Mexico City, where the K-pop genre began to take root in 2002, the project explores a phenomenon that now involves millions of people. With its endless forms: TV series, comics, dance, concerts, and merchandising. K-pop has become one of the most consumed music genres in Mexico, with 4.2 million fans in the country.
Every Sunday, in the central square under the Monument to the Mexican Revolution, teenagers gather to challenge and ally with each other, creating a real community.
K-pop is not just about dressing up and dancing; it has evolved into a lifestyle, a powerful tool for liberation for young people who look to other cultures and draw inspiration from idols to discover and expand their identity.
In this video, we collaborated with the group A-ZONE, composed of boys and girls aged 17 to 24, whom we met one Sunday afternoon in the square while they were dancing.
Together with them, and a team of set designers, makeup artists, and stylists, we sought to capture what it means for these young people to dance and passionately live this global musical phenomenon.
