In my childhood we left every sporting event early to beat traffic - the end of every game was heard through Ted Leitner on 760 while I sat in my father’s car, my feet wedged between empty Big Gulps and stacks of ungraded papers.
There were always stacks of papers.
At the time, I assumed they belonged to his students.
Only years later did I learn that some were studies on streak shooting in basketball, unfair labor practices for Burger King employees, or the frequency with which minors passed billboards advertising Marlboro cigarettes.
My father was a pioneer in advanced analytics.
More than 15 years before Billy Beane was lionized for Moneyball, my father was sending statistical models to MLB front offices proposing more efficient ways to structure baseball salaries.
He saved the rejection letters. One from the Assistant GM of the Chicago White Sox read:
“It was too logical for anyone to listen.”
Growing up, he kept advanced metrics for my Little League teams decades before anyone used that phrase, sent page-long game recaps to parents that read like Sportscenter scripts, and recounted every golf round shot-by-shot at the dinner table.

A year ago maddi asked me to come out to Upstate New York and document the recording of her new record ACE. I've been in the studio many times before with her, but this time was different. She had such a conviction and a sense of direction for this album that I hadn't seen. She and Robbie Lackritz co-produced this album and they were a perfect team. The environment, the studio, the band made those two weeks incredible. Typical me only came with black and white film. But, as soon as I landed I knew I made a mistake. The fall colors were so brilliant. I call a friend and had some color film sent out. I shot 63 rolls of film in 6 days. I couldn't help myself. I truly believe this is her best work to date, and this record will change the trajectory of her career. I love her like she is one of my own, and I couldn't be more proud of her, and this record. It comes out on Oct 10th. Be sure to watch her on Kimmel tonight. I would say come out to the record release show this Thursday... but it sold out in minutes. I'm so honored to have been invited to this, and i can say it will definitely go down as one my all time favorites. So proud of this girl. @madicunningham@rlackritz #madisoncunningham

Leo had a weekend. @musicounts invited him to be their “Red Carpet Correspondent” for @thejunoawards . It started last year when he got moved out of his class and didn’t have a music teacher. Leo made an album (link in my bio) and decided we’d donate the money to MusiCounts so that more kids have access to music.
@feistmusic Multitudes has been nominated for Best Adult Alternative Album and Best Artwork @thejunoawards .
Also, my business partner of nearly two decades, Chip Sutherland, is receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. They made me pre-tape my speech because he knows not to trust me live. Very proud.
Congratulations @colby__richardson@counterglance@heather__goodchild@mockyrecordings ; thrilled to celebrate with you all.
