🏁♻️🕳🗃 . Outs to my heart @rachealcrowther and @montezpress for inviting me to be the contributor for August in their Interjection Calendar series this year ✨️ . Outs to my co-d @jacksonlloydezra for being the 👨🏾‍🔬🧙🏾‍♂️ that he is and for translating my ideas into viable scent concoctions that could then be warped into Nose Buster, the visual essay you now see infront of you 🧨 . All of the stylised representations of the names of the ingredients that make up the four scents have a cultural reference or two, or three, or five attached to them, and all of these references work together to project a set of pivots in stance that I have taken recently in relation to my practice...so this essay works as a visual diary too I guess. . The title of the essay is a flip of the Californian slang term eye buster, with an eye buster being an extremely direct and disrespectful tattoo that a gang member would get in order to draw a very clear line on where their allegiance(s) lay with and who they considered to be an enemy of theirs. I'm not going waste anyones time trying to force it with some jarring 'art text', there'll be a 'proper' write up of some sort about it down the road once I've distilled, but for now this is just a bit of what I want to say, and what I'm willing to give up to you at this moment in time...this is an archive of a part of British history more than anything, not a complete archive, but my archive, and the cultural movement it's involved with has had forces, you know who and whom I'm talking about, try to sweep it under the rug and erase it...it's also seven years of my life, straight up, it just is...Wednesday 1st November 2017 - Friday 7th March 2025, those are the dates for when I downloaded the first and last of the 3879 files that make up this 'film'...but not only has this been my life, it's also been dozens if not hundreds of other peoples lives, some of them still being with us, some of them not, nearly all of them very young, a lot of them too young...and I've only bore witness to it through a laptop screen, they've lived it, and it's fried my brain, so what do you think it might've done to them? Some doors of sanity for me have been closed because of this footage, it's made me ill, frustrated, infuriated, cry, tapped (well...more tapped), disappointed, sorrowful, confused, detached...and I say all of this not to centre myself nor my experience with it, but to try to get it across to you as sincerely as I possibly can that the title of the video installation isn't just a warped tip of the hat to Douglas Gordon, it's what this stuff will do to you. 🚨 NOTICE 🚨 . R.I.P. Germain - Play Dead (2025) . 🎨 Digital video, 4 minutes 28 seconds . Play Dead, a new film by R.I.P. Germain will be screened throughout the day on Saturday 29th March at Cabinet 🏴‍☠️ 12:00 - 18:00 ✨️ . The film will be shown exclusively for this one day only within the context of his current show Anti-Blackness Is Bad, Even The Parts That We Like . Play Dead is a rampage through the deep stacks, comprised wholly from found footage cannibalised from the steady churn of the UK Drill scene. Testament to R.I.P. Germain’s encyclopedic knowledge of the material, the film deftly weaves through 160 clips, borrowing from the vernacular of the genre to create a meta-music-video that dismantles as it builds. Casting a critical eye on the Drill scene and exercising its own cinematic tools to see how they work and to what ends, Play Dead represents a meditation on unresolved issues of co-option, replication and representation of Black trauma that remain points of open friction in Germain’s work. . Trafficking in all that’s seductive while simultaneously choking the viewer with a feast of hyper-charged motifs and scenes, any scopophilic pleasure the audience may feel is constantly undermined with a creeping unease. Breakneck pace and relentless swagger emerge from a rigorous logic of shot-selection, categorisation of gesture, location, and subject matter that lend the work a forensic feel that constantly cuts away at its carnivalesque air. Play Dead begs us to sharpen our attention to the broader trends alive in this footage, and to take seriously the turbulent lived-experience of the rappers and their communities. . I'm genuinely asking this question by the way, because I've never seen a generation get wiped out this quickly and so completely... . Oh, and...I just want to put it out there that there is *663 years and 8 months* of prison time in this one collage. . That number doesn't take into account that there are still five separate ongoing trials for attempted murder in this collage to account for too...that's why the asterisks are there...that number will go up eventually. . To be honest, this doesn't even have all of the UK Drill rappers currently serving terms in prison, I eventually had to set a limit to maintain visual legibility...think about that 😪 . Anyway, apart from being constantly jarred off by going through this stuff again, it makes me ill (in a real way), turn up...it's there, enjoy...or don't, whatever... . Worl Vybz (Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej W Warszawie) both celebrates the opening of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and warns about the dangers of a false dawn of institutional accountability. The bleached and bruised and scarified ‘skin’ are signifiers of modifications, mutilations and appropriations — speaking of self hatred, disrespect for culture or the tension born of trying to serve two masters: art and capitalism. The work represents a challenge to the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw to become the museum it aspires to be, and the cake is a metonym to that aspiration. . Thank you @msnwarszawa for inviting me to be a part of your inaugural show, and congratulations on finally reaching the finishing line and opening a permanent space after 🏃🏼‍♀️ on that journey for 20 years 🫠 .
