Dear creative,
When you stand on the global stage on May 9, 2026 at the AMVCA's to receive your award, in your acceptance speech, remember your fellow Nigerians: their lives, their businesses, and what they are passing through at the hands of xenophobic South Africans.
Let your acceptance speech be a platform. Just as Spike Lee, on the Oscar stage in 2019, spoke for four centuries of enslaved ancestors and urged voters to choose love over hate. Just as Joaquin Phoenix, accepting his Oscar in 2020, spoke against the belief "that one nation, one people, one race, one gender, one species has the right to dominate, use and control another with impunity". Just as Trevor Noah, at the 2019 Oscars, took a global stage and reflected aloud on apartheid in his own South Africa.
The AMVCA stage is not just for thanking your stylist. It is for refusing to pretend that celebrities and artists live in a rarefied bubble of glamour and adulation. It is for refusing to perform "One Africa" on a red carpet while Nigerians are attacked, businesses burn, and lives are lost on the streets of Pretoria and Johannesburg. It is for speaking up, because silence is complicity, and in complicity, xenophobia thrives.
As we gather to pretend we are one Africa, let us remember: unity without accountability is a lie. The winners holding that trophy must find their voice, their fellow citizens in South Africa are losing theirs.
