Removing a column is easy. Keeping the house up is the tricky part.
We often go into remodels with clients asking, "Can we remove these columns?" Sometimes it’s a wall. Sometimes it’s a post right where you want to put your couch. Either way, opening up a space is often possible — you just may need an engineer on board.
In this project, the existing columns flanked a large island we were removing and weren’t in an ideal location. Rather than open everything up completely, we used the structural beam we needed anyway as an opportunity — dropping a header and creating a cased opening that helps the spaces connect more naturally while fitting the character of the home.
Good design is sometimes less about eliminating structure and more about reimagining it.
So if you’re wondering, Can we move this wall? Remove this column?
Our answer is usually: Yes… but. 😄
