We had the privilege to work with @flux_design_pdx on his house remodel. Besides redesigning the kitchen and the basement stair, we got to hone lots of fussy steel details on the new stair bay to the backyard.
Of course, the details were executed perfectly! It's always fun to collaborate with Brian!
Found this old schematic design perspective in the archives today while looking for various other files. It's a fun game room design for a daylit basement.
I have to get this basement photographed someday soon. It kept a lot of the original vibes.
My son just sent a photo of his first woodshop project! A pretty tough first project when he's never used any of the big shop tools before.
He called last night stressed that he messed up the angle cuts on 2 of the legs the day before it was due. (We've all been there before.) But he went in early and recut them and got it done. It always goes faster the second time round! I'm impressed and proud of him.
We realized that we didn't really connect the last Lake Oswego kitchen post to the first part of this remodel.
We started the primary bathroom project right as the COVID shutdown happened. It has a beautiful modern vibe that was all about enjoying the lake view in a quiet spa-like setting.
At the same time as the bath remodel, we put in a 15' wide living room window that motived the kitchen remodel to start less than a year from completing the bath. With such a stunning view we had to improve the kitchen at the opposite side of the room.
Now they can entertain on the island and gaze at the lake!

A new Lake Oswego project with past clients.
This kitchen was designed together with a primary suite remodel Unfortunately, the clients had to wait to remodel their kitchen for budget reasons. Sometimes you can't do it all but it was good to have a masterplan to easily plan for the next phase of work.
We gutted the kitchen and reworked all the appliances, cabinets and countertops. The clients new they wanted clean modern oak cabinets and then they found a stone countertop that we all fell in love with. A statement quartzite that even the Ann Sacks tile backsplash had a hard time competing with. However, it does play a nice supporting role in the palette!

Part 2: Martin Luther Pipes
New openings for the dining room.
With just a few moves the flow of this home was greatly changed. We were able to create a big opening from the kitchen where it was previously just a double swing door. (See the before photo.)
Additionally, the dining room wasn’t originally connected to the living room but that was a travesty because the living room is a beautiful 1.5 story space with a gorgeous window bay and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. This room was previous only accessible from the entry hall but now you can easily access it from the kitchen and the dining room. So much easier to flow and enjoy all their spaces.
Details, flooring and moldings were matched exactly by @daverushtobuild so the remodel looks completely original.

A tour of the Martin Luther Pipes house! This is the beautiful #wadehamptonpipes house he designed for his father.
We had the privilege to improve the basement into livable space. What was once a chaotic open area for storage and utilities became a nice layout for a family room, laundry room, game room and a bedroom with a shared bathroom.
We even found room under the stairs for a little wetbar that is off the family room.
However, the laundry room became everyones favorite. The painted concrete tile and rich green cabinets make it an oasis (for chores.) Why not make the place you work beautiful and enjoyable?

Having a little fun with the design of the entry into the historic Stoel Residence in Dunthorpe. We were looking at simple markers with simple materials that are compatible with the midcentury house. We looked at wood, steel and concrete options. All were pretty fun and exciting to detail.
I'm glad I didn't have to choose!
We are going with the wood option and used Procreate to located the piers on the site (image 2). We are really enjoying use this app.

Our final site visit to a Lake Oswego remodel.
The addition added a guest suite, a home office, a basement workshop and a covered back porch that engages with the back yard and extended their family time outdoors. They are still eating outside! (But probably not today.)

Part 3: Basement Remodel in the Forest Park Craftsman House.
The basement was completely unfinished. It was a typical damp space with utilities running everywhere; some abandoned but still taking up space. We designed the space with a storage room, a guest room, a full bath and a big open family room for playing games, making music and watching TV.
The basement design became the canvas for the owner and her fine artist friend to explore deep rich color schemes that make this space so memorable. The wet bar we designed with the owner accommodated delicious glass tiles that looked like candy. This tile was also integrated into the stove tile surround and the bathroom shower.
Recycled doors & hardware were integrated into the design along with warm Doug Fir paneling to maintain an old house charm.
