A visual exploration of the Marrakech ancient wall, tracing its transition from a historical barrier designed to ward off potential enemies to a space now inhabited by laboring communities. The focus lies on overcoming a metaphorical wall, symbolizing a combination of psychological, social, and economic barriers.

#maidelaphoto #photographyfestival #marrakech

When most people think of Morocco’s leather tanneries, they think of Fez. But Marrakech has its own, a hidden and fading tannery. Artist Rida Tabit captures the stories and lives of the people working there. Did you know Marrakech has a leather tannery?

In his ongoing series Tabit explores the Medina wall of Marrakech. Through intimate photographs, he captures the cities daily life along this historic structure. Presented at Galerie Poche, a space inspired by the architectural concept of the “poche”, Tabit’s work finds a perfect home. “Tabit’s photographs are not only documentation, but an invitation. They ask us to slow down, to see and listen to the spaces we too often ignore, and to consider what walls might tell us if we truly paid attention.” – Curator Emma Waslander ✹ Special Event: Join us for a Q&A with Rida Tabit Wednesday July 9th | Soho House Amsterdam Along The Wall – Rida Tabit at Galerie Poche Open to the public: July 6th, 2025 (14:30 – 17:00) Galerie Poche, Leen Jongewaardkade 109, Amsterdam Free Entry @ridaseyes @galeriepoche @jamarchitecten @emmawaslander @minaabouzahra Partners @sohohouse @littlegreene.nl @erco_nlbe @yotel @deckamsterdam More info: jamarchitecten.nl/Galerie-Poche #RidaTabit #AlongTheWall #GaleriePoche #AmsterdamArt #MarrakechMedina #PhotoExhibition #MoroccanPhotography #JAMarchitecten #EmmaWaslander #MinaAbouzahra #ArtAnnouncement

// Experimenting, Rida Tabit transcends the traditional boundaries of image capture. Focusing on cultural heritage, identity and hard-working communities, he gives pride of place to dyeing and its traditional skills. Beyond visual aesthetics, this is a sociological approach, in a quest to understand what shapes our memorial identities. Rida Tabit understands society through the lens of his camera, expressing himself through his experiences. Dyeing processes, from acid to iron sulfate, a kaleidoscope of browns reveals age-old secrets. #arts #artcontemporain #artwork #foundation #jardinrouge #montresso

How can I represent the deep connection between Marrakech’s traditional tanners and their craft while highlighting its degradation and the silence surrounding it? Starting from this question, I created handmade paper using the main substance from the tanning process. Cyanotype portraits of the tanners were then made and partially erased using acid, a recently introduced chemical that replaced the natural methods once used. These partially erased portraits were stitched onto the handmade paper using wool, serving as both an aesthetic backdrop and a metaphor for the deep connection between the tanners and their craft. This body of work was produced during my recent residency at @montressoartfoundation and is currently on display at @artorium_espacedart during the trio exhibition Â«Â Ù…Ű§ŰŻŰ©, Alchimies photographiques » Special thanks to @mourad_boulhana for the photos, @ismailelaaddioui for the graphics, and @hdmi_king for the sound.

@ridaseyes @montressoartfoundation @artorium_espacedart
