selections from the weekend’s concert. clips are a bit choppy bc there was some lag in the stream, but audio is mostly good.
during one part of the duo set a big puff of rosin went in my face and i felt like pre game lebron and really struggled not to laugh
all of my love and thanks to hannah for doing so much to bring this together. was really fun to do the duo pieces. always a big risk to show up to the venue and let it rip but it was really fun and im so happy with how it came together. hope to do it again.

Thank you so much to those who joined us in-person or on livestream, and see you at the next one!! (Also an oblique shoutout to Jack White— I wouldn’t be here without you in the strangest sort of domino effect)
JUST ANNOUNCED!! Sunday, November 3 at good old @constellationchicago !! Rhythm is image returns for an evening of music for electric guitar (and at times electronics) featuring guitarist @jamiemonck !! The program includes works by James May, Cassie Wieland, Andrew M Rodriguez, and director Hannah A Barnes!! This will be a fun evening — hope to see you there!
LAST NIGHT!!!! Many, many thank you to those who made last night possible — composers, performers, and listeners alike!! This was a thrilling, well-attended Canadian debut with a program of works by Kaija Saariaho, Liam Ross Gibson, Liza Lim, Hannah A Barnes, Pierre Jodlowski, and Hamidreza Khalatbari, with performances by Jenn Mong, Elsa Barozzi, Bailey Wantuch, and Antonin Granier!! Work for the next one has already begun!!!
Last night could not have gone any better!! I am just overwhelmed with relief, joy, pride, etc. etc. to have been able to experience the concert as a composer, director/madwoman, AND listener!! This was rhythm is image’s first concert in Montréal and will CERTAINLY be the first of many!! I started directing concerts because there were pieces I wanted to play (Mikrophonie!!) and pieces I wanted to hear, and I find that this is another form of world-building and artistic expression. Many many thank you’s incoming:
Thank you to Liam Ross Gibson and Hamidreza Khalatbari for their beautiful new pieces; Elsa Barozzi for playing Liam’s piece so beautifully (things really worked out!!);Bailey Wantuch for a BEAUTIFUL and expressive performance of my new piece (“The Open Book of Hidden Cities” — two (for now) miniatures that rehabilitate material from a previous piece in a new context, inspired (again!) by Calvino’s “Invisible Cities” — I’m glad people got it!) and absolutely shredding on Hamid’s basically-concerto; Jenn Mong for opening the concert with a breathtaking performance of Kaija Saariaho’s “Ballade” (rest in peace, our queen, thank you for the music); and Antonin Granier for daring and expressive performances of works by Liza Lim and Pierre Jodlowski!! I am very proud of this curated program — each piece spoke to each other and unfolded in a very interesting and surprising way! I had a really special listening experience sitting in the front row.
Thank you to everyone who came to listen — it was so nice to have a packed hall!! Thank you to the Canadian Music Centre of Québec for the beautiful space and making things so easy!! Thank you Louis-Michel Tougas for documentation and tech support!! Thank you to MGSS for the special projects funding!! Thank you to my parents for making the drive to be here with me!!
I am so grateful for the beautiful musical things and wonderful people in my life!! Contributing to my musical community is very important to me, so, ON Y VA!!
CONCERT ALERT!! Three weeks from tonight, @rhythmisimage will host our first concert since moving to the Great White North!! Join us for an evening at the Centre de musique canadienne au Québec (in Montréal) for a concert of solo works by Kaija Saariaho, Liza Lim, Pierre Jodlowski, my colleagues Liam Ross Gibson and Hamid-Reza Khalatbari, and Hannah A Barnes! It will be a fun evening of contemporary music, hope to see you there!!
Announcement!! 📣 In ONE WEEK, a new collaboration will take place in the form of a lecture-recital entitled “Sounding out Feminism: Dialogue Between Texts and Techniques” at the @she_uark SHE Festival of Women in Music! This lecture-recital pairs up HAB @composinghannah of rhythm is image and Joanna @walking_singing of @aeonensemble with discussion of the female voice in works by Rebecca Saunders, and HAB’s (relatively) new piece, “The Garden.” We are excited to collaborate to bring this to life!!
Apologies for the extended absence but WE ARE SO BACK. First up is posting photos from last May at our favorite haunt, Constellation. All beautiful photos by Evelyn Ryan!
We are also now an international ensemble in some form or another, since director HAB has moved to Montréal in pursuit of her doctorate at McGill University! However, remaining in contact with Chicago’s thriving new music scene is a priority! 💯 rii is going on the road next week — stay tuned for more!
THIS SUNDAY, MAY 21ST, 8:30 pm at @constellationchicago !! Join us (sadly not the dog, but she got your attention!) for an evening of music before we MOVE TO MONTREAL. Link in bio to purchase tickets. If you attend via livestream, please consider purchasing a livestream ticket to help support the performers!! There’s a dog to feed!!
Happy anniversary to us! Three years ago tonight rhythm is image was born under a different name — Purposeless Play. We presented a program of Bithell, Xenakis, and Stockhausen (yes, regrettably all men — I know better, now!). Nothing about this journey has been straightforward or easy, but we’re still here.
