This is what we’re talking about when we say “protect”: diving below the surface to find healthy, teeming ecosystems, more and bigger fish in local fishers’ nets, coastal communities whose ocean backyards are wild and alive. Today is #WorldWildlifeDay — a celebration of the wild and a reminder that we are not separate from nature. We are part of it, and it sustains us. From reefs that buffer storms to oceans that feed billions, we are part of a living, breathing world. This is what’s at stake. This is what’s worth protecting alongside the coastal communities who know their waters best. #ReviveOurOcean #DynamicPlanet #Biodiversity #NatureMatters Footage credit: @natgeopristineseas & @openplanetorg

This World Ocean Day, as the UN Ocean Conference is about to begin, we have five years left to quadruple effective ocean protection and fill the gap to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 (30x30). Scientists and economists have documented the benefits of full marine protection, but the new film Ocean with David Attenborough tells their story more clearly than ever. At 99, the world’s greatest natural history storyteller shares his most powerful message: marine protection works. According to a new study by Dynamic Planet and @natgeopristineseas , the world needs to create 190,000 new small marine protected areas (ideally no-take areas) nearshore to get to 30% of the territorial seas alone. That would restore marine life, replenish small-scale fisheries, improve the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on a healthy ocean for their livelihoods, and foster climate resilience. My organization @rewild is proud to support @reviveourocean , a co-producer of the Ocean film, to help scale coastal conservation globally by inspiring, enabling, and equipping local coastal communities to protect their own ocean backyard. Rooted in local knowledge and action, the initiative partners with best-in-class ocean conservation leaders, ensuring that marine protection is driven by those who know their waters best. Today, their work goes beyond safeguarding nature. It empowers and equips local communities to lead the creation and management of marine protected areas, while supporting local fisheries and tourism and the livelihoods that depend on them. 🐟 Because when communities are at the heart of conservation, protection becomes not just regenerative, but transformative. #LetUsHearTheOcean #OceanoAzulFoundation #ReviveOurOcean #NatGeoPristineSeas #30x30 #MarineProtectionWorks

Every marine protected area started with someone. The story of Revive Our Ocean began long before we launched last April 2025, and it was born partly from a single question that kept emerging: since marine protection is so effective — since it restores fish populations, strengthens ecosystems, and improves livelihoods — why hasn’t it scaled? Revive Our Ocean is rooted in the stories, experiences, and lessons learned from ocean leaders protecting their coastlines. We contacted those known for creating the most successful coastal marine protected areas (MPAs) and we heard their origin stories, current needs, and how they would scale to 30×30 in their countries. We found that each MPA had originated by a passionate and dedicated community organizer — a fisher, environmentalist, local administrator — some community champion who knew marine life was worth far more alive in the long run than dead in the short term and wanted to fight for the long run. 🔗 Read more at the link in bio. Today, we celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday! Sir David has been on our screens since 1954, a constant voice of wonder, joy, and awe for life on this pale blue dot we all call home. He has narrated a planet in transformation, from its wild abundance to the urgent challenges we face today. He hasn’t just documented nature. He has taken us into the field with him so we can feel it. In Ocean with David Attenborough, he shows us that a lifetime is long enough to witness profound loss, but also long enough to help bring the ocean back to life. In fact, effective protection can revive marine life in as little as five years. To celebrate, why not bring people together and host a screening in your community? Visit the link in bio to host a screening of Ocean with David Attenborough. Inspired by Attenborough and first-hand accounts from elders around the world regarding loss and recovery, Revive Our Ocean is developing something new. Stay tuned for more stories from our sea, told across a lifetime and by those who have witnessed change—from what the ocean was, to what it could be again if we let it. @natgeo @silverback_films @openplanetorg @all3media_int @minderoofoundation @Arksen @10percentfortheocean Don Quixote Foundation @insidenatgeo @fondationprincealbert2 @natgeopristineseas #DavidAttenborough #OceanFilm #Ocean #OurSeaInALifeTime #ReviveOurOcean

Bottom trawlers are industrial fishing vessels that drag heavy nets fitted with metal chains—some as large as 12 Boeing 747s—along the seabed, indiscriminately scooping up marine life and coughing up ocean sediment as they go. It doesn’t have to be this way. Türkiye’s Gökova Bay shows what happens when destructive practices like bottom trawling are restricted and marine ecosystems are given space to recover through no-take reserves (in Türkiye, ‘No-Fishing Zones’ or NFZs). Ocean life rebounds—including the return of endangered species such as sandbar sharks and Mediterranean monk seals—and coastal communities see significant benefits. In fact, in Gökova Bay, protection boosted fishing outside the NFZs and the income of local fishers tripled in only four years after protection. Designated as Türkiye’s first No Fishing Zones (NFZs), or Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in 2010, Türkiye’s Gökova Bay now stands as a powerful example of how effective marine protection can restore ecosystems and local economies. New data from @NatGeoPristineSeas reveals the broader cost of bottom trawling across Europe: up to €16 billion in net annual costs to society. Gökova Bay demonstrates what is possible when marine protection is effective. When we safeguard the ocean, nature—and economies—can recover quickly, together. Ocean with David Attenborough was created to reach and inspire audiences worldwide with a powerful story of the ocean, as it has never been seen before. The film tells the story of why we need a healthy ocean, how our actions are putting marine life—and ourselves—at risk, and how protecting the ocean can yield extraordinary results. It dispels myths that have perpetuated the destruction of our seas and the livelihoods they support. One of these myths is that protecting the ocean will harm those who depend on it for a living, such as fishers. But the stories featured in the film—like the marine protection success stories and case studies that have shaped Revive Our Ocean—shatter that myth. Ocean with David Attenborough shows us that the ocean has an extraordinary ability to recover—if we take action now. As a co-producer of the film, it has been incredible to witness and be part of bringing the benefits of marine protection to a wider global audience. Since the film’s release, Revive Our Ocean has collaborated on hosting high-profile screenings—from Athens to Lisbon to the European Central Bank—bringing together national decision-makers and local ocean actors. In addition, in 2025, Revive Our Ocean facilitated 271 community screenings across 52 countries, reaching nearly 33,000 people. More than half of these screenings included influential guests involved in decision-making. Read the full 2025 Ocean with David Attenborough impact report: at the link in bio. New data from @natgeopristineseas shows that the economic impact of bottom trawling— which occurs in more than half of Europe’s marine protected areas—is significantly greater than previously understood, with societal costs reaching up to €16 billion per year. The peer-reviewed study details the costs of bottom trawling—a practice that involves dragging heavy nets across the seafloor, affecting everything in its path and releasing carbon long-stored in the seabed. Alongside food waste, subsidies, and fuel, the cost to the European public is approximately 90 times higher than the €180 million in annual profits generated by the industry. Phasing out bottom trawling in marine protected areas and reducing overall trawling activity would enable European nations to significantly reduce carbon emissions and facilitate the fishing industry’s transition to more stable, sustainable practices. As part of Revive Our Ocean’s mission to accelerate and scale coastal protection worldwide by 2030, we must not only create new, effective coastal marine protected areas (MPAs) that benefit marine life, people, the economy, and our climate—but also strengthen existing MPAs by ending destructive fishing practices like bottom trawling within their boundaries. Because a protected forest that is bulldozed is not protected, neither is a marine protected area (MPA) that allows bottom trawling. This Earth Day 🌍, and every day, we’re celebrating and supporting the ocean leaders who are protecting their coastlines and bringing marine life and local economies back. It started with a question: Since we know marine protection works, why hasn’t it scaled? So we asked the leaders who know best—those managing successful coastal MPAs around the world. Fishers, scientists, community advocates. People doing the work every day. What we heard was clear: marine protection brings life back—improving fishing and tourism, strengthening ecosystems, and supporting local livelihoods, even in the face of significant challenges. Despite different geographies and cultures, clear patterns emerged, shaping Revive Our Ocean. We know no organization can do this work alone, so we’ve developed a Collective model for a leading community of practice, to scale what works and meet the demand of what the world requires. #ReviveOurOcean #EarthDay #EarthDay2026 🔗 Read more at the link in bio.
