More mammals are under pressure.
But recovery is possible.
This Endangered Species Day, the latest Mammal Red List shows both warning signs, and proof that conservation works.

A week from today, on May 22, the world will celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity with the theme "acting locally for global impact."
Join Reverse the Red for a celebratory session, designed to showcase the actions happening throughout the network to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Protecting biodiversity includes action close to home with positive ripple effects that can reach far beyond, and these three winners of the 2025 Reverse the Red Accelerator Award are doing just that.

What if hope and optimism were the primary drivers for global species recovery?
In the article 'Hope in Action: How the World Species Congress Mobilised Species Recovery Action in the conservation community', published last year in the joint WAZA and @izeducators publication, Megan Joyce and Jenny Gray explore how the inaugural World Species Congress mobilised the conservation community.
Organised by @reverse.the.red in May 2024 as a 24-hour virtual event, the Congress engaged over 110,000 participants worldwide, shifting the professional narrative towards a mindset of agency and possibility.
Rooted in behavioural science, the Congress demonstrated that hope is a practical necessity for long term commitment and action. This approach empowered professionals to influence outcomes, resulting in more than 13,000 direct conservation actions and thousands of public Species Pledges.
