On Endangered Species Day, we are thrilled to share a rare and significant sighting of the Ecuadorian White-fronted Capuchin! 🐒
This species is one of the most endangered primates in the world, as fewer than 300 remain in the wild. 💔
These critically endangered primates cling to survival in the Chocó rainforest, a biodiversity hotspot on the northwestern edge of South America.
Our local partner, @fundacion_maquipucuna , recorded this extremely rare appearance in a reserve we are helping expand together.
Endangered species like this need our support more than ever. One million species are at risk of extinction this century, helpless against the impacts of human activities, including:
🌳 Habitat loss due to deforestation, extraction, and development.
🚫 Hunting and poaching for illegal markets.
🔥 Droughts, fires, floods, and other natural disasters caused by climate change.
The best way to save endangered species is to protect their habitats.
Around the world, our supporters have helped us protect habitats for 3,296 species across 66 million acres of rainforests and other tropical landscapes. That’s an area the size of Colorado!
And we won’t stop now.
The stakes are rising, and endangered species like the Ecuadorian White-fronted Capuchin won’t survive without our help.
We must continue to fight against the destruction of their habitats.

Our incredible donors just helped protect critical habitat for Africa’s smallest owl!🦉
The Endangered Sokoke Scops Owl clings to survival in the Dakatcha Woodland, a coastal forest on Kenya’s southeastern coast.
Only 10% of East Africa’s coastal forests remain, and commercial agriculture and charcoal production threaten to destroy the rest of this shrinking habitat.
Through the generosity of our donors, we helped secure long-term protection for the woodland’s remarkable wildlife, including the Sokoke Scops Owl. In partnership with @arochakenya , we recently protected 265 more acres in the Dakatcha Woodland.
To date, this partnership has preserved more than 5,000 acres. Combined with protections achieved with our other partners, @worldlandtrust and @nature_kenya , this totals 25,000 acres of safe, secure habitat.
The Sokoke Scops Owl may be tiny, standing only 6 inches tall, but it makes a big impact on its ecosystem. With an insect-based diet, it controls pest populations and balances the food web.
Fewer than 2,000 individuals remain, so this small bird can be hard to find. But in the new protected area, A Rocha Kenya recently reported sightings of seven different roosts.
From all of us at Rainforest Trust, thank you for your support! 💚
When we turn our shared commitment into action, we can secure a safe future for vulnerable species around the world.
We are excited to share updates from our work across Africa, from the tropical high forests of Ghana to the scrublands of South Africa’s Southern Cape! 🌍
These stories highlight the protection of several unique biodiversity hotspots, as well as new efforts underway in the Angola Highlands and the Democratic Republic of Congo. 🐾
By supporting our Conservation Action Fund (CAF), you help protect critical habitat for species such as White-bellied Pangolins, Secretarybirds, and African Forest Elephants.
Your support enables rapid action where conservation needs are most urgent, helping secure landscapes vital to biodiversity, climate stability, and local communities.
Across Africa, CAF-supported projects have already protected more than 12.1 million acres, with an additional 39.2 million acres currently underway. Combined, these 51.4 million acres support more than 1,100 threatened species and store over 3.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide. 🐆

Together, we can continue to protect vulnerable species and the habitats they call home!
For a migratory bird to survive, every stop along its journey must be safe.
The East Atlantic Flyway stretches from the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of Africa, and its coastal habitats face intense pressure. 🌍
Development, pollution, and overfishing are destroying critical stopover sites where birds stop to feed, rest, and fortify their strength for seasonal migrations.
On World Migratory Bird Day, you can help save a critical resting site on the East Atlantic Flyway.
We need your support to help preserve 330,000 acres of pristine coastal and marine habitat in the Bijagós Islands, off the Atlantic coast of Guinea Bissau, Africa. 🌊🌿
With Partenariat Régional pour la Conservation de la zone côtière et Marine en Afrique de l’Ouest (PRCM), we are working to establish Marine Protected Areas that safeguard the area’s abundant biodiversity.
A rich mix of old-growth mangroves, seagrass beds, mudflats, and sand flats surround the 88 islands of the Bijagós Archipelago. Its intertidal ecosystems sustain sea turtles, sharks, rays, dolphins, and one of the richest fisheries in West Africa.
A million migrating birds converge across the seasons, like Grey Plovers, which spend their winters here after flying thousands of miles from Arctic breeding grounds.
Long-distance migratory shorebirds like these are among the most vulnerable to habitat loss along the flyway.
You can make a difference for biodiversity and the birds of the Bijagós Islands. 💚

Happy World Tapir Day!
Tapirs have lived on Earth for 55 million years, but their long timeline could end if we don’t protect their rainforest homes. 💔
Today, tapirs live in Central America, South America, and Asia, where deforestation is destroying critical habitat. Population numbers are falling for all tapir species, and their loss would impact entire ecosystems.
Known as “gardeners of the forest,” tapirs eat a wide variety of fruits, then disperse seeds throughout the ecosystem. 🥭🍃
As they forage, they create paths through the brush. Tapirs also spend significant time in rivers, where they dive for aquatic plants or hide from predators, using their snouts as snorkels.
Through the generosity of our supporters, we are helping protect habitat for tapirs around the world:
🇵🇦 In Panama, our project helped triple the size of Cocobolo Nature Reserve, a biodiversity hotspot that shelters the Endangered Baird’s Tapir.
🇨🇴 In Colombia’s high-altitude forests, we are supporting a new national park that will protect the Endangered Mountain Tapir.
🇧🇷 In Brazil, we are helping protect the world’s largest tropical wetland and the Vulnerable Lowland Tapir.
🇲🇾 In Malaysia, we are supporting expanded protection across ancient rainforests that sustain the Endangered Malay Tapir.
Even with these conservation successes, the threats to tapirs and their habitats persist.
On World Tapir Day, you can be a part of our global efforts to protect this unique animal. When you give to our Conservation Action Fund, you help us work quickly to protect tropical habitats and species at greatest risk.

We are honored to share a major conservation announcement from Madagascar! 🌍
Madagascar’s new prime minister, Mamitiana Rajaonarison, formally unveiled his government’s commitment to their landmark 30x30 Biodiversity Plan — one of the most ambitious conservation commitments led by a nation in Africa, and a blueprint for how nations can turn their global biodiversity pledges into concrete action.
The stakes for global biodiversity conservation could not be higher.
Madagascar is home to approximately 5% of all species on Earth, with 90% of its wildlife found nowhere else on the planet.
This bold strategy will safeguard millions of acres of critical terrestrial and marine ecosystems by 2030, while directly benefiting more than three million people.
Built by Malagasy scientists, communities, and institutions, the plan places local communities at the center of conservation as its stewards and its primary beneficiaries.
And progress is already underway!
In February 2026, Madagascar designated 21 new protected areas covering nearly 5.5 million acres, bringing the national total to over 23 million acres.
In late March, 50 scientists, the majority Malagasy, convened in Antananarivo for the country’s first full scientific re-prioritization of terrestrial biodiversity since 1995, producing a cartographic atlas to guide implementation of the plan.
Three pilot conservation landscapes are already operational. The plan targets $150–220 million mobilized annually for conservation financing, with $120 million sought for three new priority landscapes by 2028.
Rainforest Trust is proud to support this extraordinary commitment to protecting one of the most irreplaceable places on Earth 💚

The Angola Highlands watershed gives rise to mighty African rivers and sustains the world’s largest wildlife oasis. But threats are advancing from all sides. 🐘🌿
🚜 Land is being cleared for agriculture, charcoal production, and development.
🔥 Climate change is severely straining ecosystems.
The Luchazi name for this landscape, Lisima Lya Mwono, means “Source of Life,” and the region is abundant with biodiversity. The waters that flow from the highlands sustain countless animals and millions of people. Their survival depends on the Lisima landscape.
The Congo, Zambezi, and Okavango Rivers originate here. These rivers provide fresh water for over 1 million people across 7 countries.
The Angola Highlands provide 95% of the water in the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest wildlife oasis and a lifeline for hundreds of species in the Kalahari Desert.
Habitats in the highlands support endangered species like African Savanna Elephants, African Wild Dogs, and Bateleurs. 🐘
Biodiversity thrives here, and scientists estimate hundreds more species await scientific discovery.
Together, we can help protect 3.1 million acres of this incredible landscape. Your gift will support our local partner @fundacaolisima in their work with local communities to establish conservation areas across traditional territories, sacred forests, and critical habitat.
This Earth Day, we need your help to fight deadly threats at the Source of Life. We have one day left to meet our goal, and we need your help!

This Earth Day, help us protect the Angola Highlands! 🌍💧
Right now, the rainy season in the Angola Highlands is nearly over. Trillions of gallons of rain have fallen since October, and they will send ripple effects across the continent.
This “water tower” is pivotal to life throughout the region. It is also unprotected and vulnerable to growing threats.
We need your help to safeguard 3.1 million acres of this extraordinary landscape!
Without this watershed, one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife wonders could dry up. The highlands supply 95% of the water in the Okavango Delta, where giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, lions, elephants, hippos, antelopes, and millions of birds seek refuge from the Kalahari Desert. 🦒🦓🐆🐘
The delta is reason enough to protect the Angola Highlands, but it is only one part of the story.

Populations of Endangered Bateleurs have plummeted across Africa, dropping by 87% in just 40 years. 💔🦅
Agriculture, charcoal production, hunting, and mining have destroyed the woodlands these eagles need to survive.
With their habitat and the food it provides disappearing, Bateleurs are forced to resort to hunting and scavenging at the edges of human development, becoming pests to farmers who deliberately poison and kill them.
The Bateleur gets its name from the French word for “acrobat,” thanks to a unique flair during flight. This bird may be remarkable for its dives and somersaults, but its most important role is hunter and scavenger.
As apex predators, they control the populations of small mammals and other prey within their ecosystem. As scavengers, they remove carcasses before disease can spread.
With our local partner in Angola, @fundacaolisima , we are helping protect 3.15 million acres of habitat in one of the region’s largest, intact landscapes!
This biodiversity hotspot holds woodlands, savannas, wetlands, and the mighty rivers that provide nearly all of the water to the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest wildlife oasis. 💧
🌎 This Earth Month, you can make a difference! Help us protect the Bateleur’s home in Angola’s highlands—and the countless species that depend on it.
