We put a few Brookesia tuberculata found around camp on the table at Montagne d’Ambre National Park to pose for photos…and they started doing this :-) #brookesia #chameleon #ambermountain #madagascar
Aglyptodactylus madagascariensis breeding at Amber Mountain last week during cyclone Chido. They are normally kind of boring frogs that look like dead leaves on the forest floor but for a few days after the first big rains they turn yellow like this and have a party #ambermountain #madagascar
Mantella viridis and habitat at Ankarana National Park. I’d wanted to see this population in person for two decades—lots of variation in this species, not just the normal green we usually see photos of.

Back in December Samina and I went out in the rain to look for frogs at @vallombrenatiora The best finds were two Compsophis snakes eating chameleons (or attempting to eat them, the Calumma crypticum in the video probably escaped). These snakes are thought to mainly feed on frogs, so it was cool to see them feeding on chameleons instead when there were so many frogs around. We wrote up the observation as a note this past spring:

I presented on Madagascar’s frogs at the SSAR meeting in Ann Arbor and the IHS in Knoxville the past two weekends. Loved exploring behind-the-scenes zoo tours, and getting new ideas from all the other presenters. Looking forward to WCH next! #ssar2024 #internationalherpetologicalsymposium
Henkel's leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus henkeli) in Lokobe last November. Our guide pointed out this one on a branch around dusk. I spent some time watching it wake up and start moving around, then realized a second one was on the next tree over too. When they sleep they are so well camouflaged.

National Route 35, heading west from #ambatofinandrahana It took around 10 hours to go the last 40 km before we gave up on driving and hiked the rest of the way to camp. In the end, a week of searching turned up just six Mantella cowanii. #madagascar #fieldwork #amphibianresearch #conservation
