A permanent camp on the island. Baker Boys Beach House on Minjerribah takes the classic Straddie beach shack vernacular and translates it into something quietly spectacular. Butterfly roof acting as tarp. Sleeping pods kept deliberately small. All the focus on communal spaces, outdoor bathing, and sweeping views. Moongalba—the local Jandai word for “sitting down place”—sums it up perfectly. Last week we had the pleasure of presenting Salisbury Seam House to the QLD Institute of Architects regional jury. This addition to a 1910 workers cottage centres on a contemporary wrap-around loggia—extending internal living spaces toward the site boundaries and allowing them to be experienced almost as outdoor rooms. The new works are conceived as an inhabited threshold, mediating between house, garden, and neighbourhood, while existing parts of the cottage are celebrated and brought back to life. The project invests in longevity and adaptability, extending the life of the existing cottage through durable materials, careful detailing, and spatial strategies that allow the home to evolve over time. Made possible by the trust and generosity of our clients and builder who have been a pleasure to work with throughout the entire journey. The new additions sit gently beside the old, blending architecture with lush subtropical landscaping. Light, air and openness shape the experience • protected doors and windows maximise breezes, and a covered, double-height courtyard anchors the home with a sense of clarity and calm. Named after the Gaelic word for carpenter, SAOIR pays tribute to the craftsmen who built the original house, honouring its past while setting it up beautifully for the future. Inspired by long-term camping, the home breaks away from the idea of a traditional house, with sleeping and service spaces tucked into separate pods, all centred around an open, breezy shelter-like living zone.
