The fourth edition of the series @readingartistsbooks presents publications that, since the 1960s, have critically reflected on computational thinking—that is, ways of thinking shaped by computer-based and algorithmic processes—or that have relied on computer technologies in their making. Publications such as Alison Knowles’s A House of Dust (1969), Stanley Brouwn’s 100 this-way-brouwn-problems for computer IBM 360 model 95 (1970), and Manfred Mohr’s Artificiata I (1969) demonstrate how concepts of chance, iteration, and algorithmic logic were translated into the analogue medium of the artist’s book—often coupled with a critical reflection on the promises and limits of digital technologies. The event takes place within the framework of the Studium Fundamentale at @uni_wittenherdecke and connects to ongoing discussions within the Centre for Advanced Study Access to Cultural Goods in Digital Change at @uni_muenster . The full program will be announced shortly. The event was organized by Regine Ehleiter @reginee , Research Associate at the Chair for Digital Arts and Cultural Communication at the @wittenlab_stufu at @uni_wittenherdecke and Senior Fellow of the Centre for Advanced Study Access to Cultural Goods in Digital Change, in cooperation with the Office & Network for Media Art and Digital Culture @medienwerk.nrw and the Centre for Advanced Study Access to Cultural Goods in Digital Change at @uni_muenster . Key visual by Tabea Nixdorff @readingerrata . The reading event will take place both on site at the university and online via Zoom. Registration is now open, please see link in bio. @andreasbuelhoff @antye.guenther @umblaetterer @g_s_m_h @hannah.higgins.b @juerglehni @rosen_______ @raaraya @shinjitoya #ursulafrohne @reginee #artistsbooks #artistbooks #artistspublications #publishingasartisticpractice #computerart #computationalart #computertechnology #computergeneratedart #digitalaccess #digitalobsolescence #feministhistory #weavingandcoding

SOUNDING OUT (READING PARATEXTS) Reading Performance von Ulrich Nixdorff Sonntag, 7.

May they mean then fiercely Can they mean then fiercely Why enter a legal contract working in the interests of patriarchal, hetero-sexist, imperialist and capitalist nation states, standing in a tradition of so many of the oppressive systems that need to be dismantled in order to fight its horrific consequences… The work of dismantling could not be done without the many queer and feminist killjoys and friendships that teach us so much about ourselves and about imagining a different world. So we knew that nothing would make us happier than having a reason to celebrate all the meaningful relationships around us, because the ways in which we are able to love each other are interconnected with these relationships, they are testimony that love is never nurtured in isolation, but precariously yet expansively wrought for. Getting married is to twist a tradition which was designed against us, to our liking. If anything, I can call Li my hubby, inspired by Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein. But we just keep being forever engaged, finding new vocabularies along the way.

Today, seven years ago, I exchanged rings with Li, the love of my life, with the promise to stay forever engaged. And even if it could seem like we broke this promise with last summer’s wedding, witnessed and surrounded by the most amazing friends and (chosen) families, it feels we only deepened our engagement ever since, learning with and from each other, over and over. Here to celebrate Li, and our love. First image: last page from my essay Fehler lesen, published by Spector Books, 2019

EXHIBITION OPENING:
ANAGRAMMA TICS
May 31, 5–8PM Join us for the opening of ANAGRAMMA TICS, an exhibition by ANNE KRUL with TABEA NIXDORFF and UNICA ZÜRN, plus an accompanying bulletin text by JOHANNA HEDVA ANAGRAMMA TICS takes the form of an unconventional retrospective, wherein the various facets and outputs of artist, educator, poet and activist anne krul’s practice will be on show together for the first time. Active throughout the 1990s in various LGBTI+ and women’s organisations—such as the International Lesbian Information Service (ILIS), ZAMI and Strange Fruit the Real—krul fostered a non-hierarchical self-help approach to activism, using creative discourse, art and poetry to effect change. Throughout these many years of organising, krul was also working away on her solo artistic practice. Spanning video collage, slide installations, sculpture, audio and anagram poetry, this aspect of krul’s work is little known, despite the fact that her political activities were instrumental in ensuring better living conditions for so many young people in the Netherlands.   To make this exhibition, krul has worked with artist and typographer Tabea Nixdorff, a pre-existing collaboration that has seen the pair produce new audio works while also translating krul’s anagram poems into spatial configurations. Joining them is Unica Zürn, an artist and fellow anagram poet who has acted as a guiding reference for krul over the past four decades.  Throughout, unedited image collections turn into films, the detritus of social poetry gatherings becomes slide projections and words and their corresponding letters are literally disorganised on the page, arriving at both new configurations of meaning and a refusal of meaning all together. What results is an expression of experience, both the experience of grappling with language on a personal level— ‘language is a virus’, krul asserts to us—and the instrumentalisation of language on an institutional level, a reference to the social disciplining of so-called ‘deviant’ or ‘abnormal’ behaviour via language throughout history. Put frankly, in this exhibition, erroneous and unruly language is a practice of defiance worthy of celebration.
