Bob arrived to the studio on this day and said to Josh, "I need someone to go to the hardware store and get a 6 pound sledge". The sledge(hammer) was required to do reps of what Bob told us was the oldest exercise in human history. When it arrived Bob proceeded to teach us the fluid swing of the ancient exercise, with Josh getting a one-on-one lesson which Dan preserved with his camera. Later on a break from recording Bob took a moment to walk barefoot across the grounds to kibitz with the - lambs? - that were behind a gate nearby. He radiated joy as he spoke to them. Josh's suggestion that evening that I do a harmonica pass on Gonesville was part whimsy, so I went for it on the first take, totally prepared to walk in the control room afterwards and be told "nahh". But before I got there Bob passed me in the hallway on his way to record an overdub. His eyes were bright and his brows raised when he spoke. "Like sunshine!" he said. I don't think I've shared this memory : Bob Weir told me my harmonica performance was like sunshine. It's the first thing I thought of today when I saw the news - not the harmonica, the sunshine. The sunshine Bob brought. I didn't spend enough time with him to say I knew him really, but the man I encountered was a gentle giant, in tune, in shape and pulling all the potential from every moment and every note - out of himself, and out of us. I didn't tell anyone about recording with Bob until it was done, and then for a long time I didn't know what to say about it - Josh and Dan oversaw more sessions for the Blue Mountain album with other incredible players. I didn't know what of our work would see the light of day. I could really only say it happened. Like sunshine. That is what you are to me Bob, and how you will remain in my life. Sunshine. I'm so grateful for my time playing in the band with you. Rest easy and thank you ❤️

The recording of Kris Delmhorst's Ghosts In The Garden took place in Maine in December of 2023. It was a cozy week-long group meditation that was as peaceful and effortless as I could ever dream the recording process to be. I've never felt so centered making a record as I did making this one, so sure of the expectations and the considerable task at hand. This had everything to do with Kris and the group she assembled to do the thing. Sam Kassirer recording, playing and guiding with Colin Lester Fleming assisting, Jeremy Moses Curtis on bass, Erik Koskinen on guitars, me on drums and Kris on guitars and keys, singin' the songs. More singers and players came along afterwards to add vital brushstrokes, I'll try to tag everyone below... Kris is a gen-yoo-wine musical auteur. Everything needing to be known was in the songs she put before us, and her confidence in what she wanted the recording to be encouraged reaching beyond what was immediately accessible to see what else might be present in the moment. Sometimes the path was revealed with light, and sometimes it required a hard turn straight for the shadows. This album floors me with the many dimensions through which it gives the sensation of presence. The artistry is unfuckwithable - fixate on one detail and slowly the enormity of the composition will come forward until you are surrounded. I won't tell you which lyrics and harmonic shifts pulled me into the garden, I trust you will find your own. Ghosts In The Garden came out yesterday and the algorithmic reports indicate that lots of people are already listening. This is life as we always wish it could be and I hope it's just the beginning for this record. 15 months after our Maine sesh the band gathered this week to start playing GITG and other KD jammers live - we're in Minneapolis tonight and we have many more shows this Spring. I hope you'll come see us and make room in your life for this extraordinary album. @krisdelmhorst @fancyassmusic @erik_koskinen @samkassirer @clfrecordings @richhinman @jeffreyfoucault @taylrashtn @anaegge @annativel @rachelbaiman @anaismitchell @rosecousins @jennarozelle

We didn't go into our drowsy indie backwater of the music industry to make videos. When we started, a black and white headshot was enough to play the couch circuit, and sometimes they'd put it up on the wall of the club where it would get faded and dusty. I figured out who a lot of my heroes were by looking at those old headshots. Now that videos are a standard part of the job, you have to decide what kind of time and effort you want to throw at them, and whether worth doing is worth doing well, knowing that you're essentially lobbing a needle on the digital haystack. To give it real love and intention is almost an act of protest. Last month @krisdelmhorst got together with our old friend, the fantastic photographer @j.elon.goodman and made the most beautiful document, full of strangers and people we love, all around our little town, and all reacting in real time to something they hadn't seen. The result is dazzling. It's the video for 'Not the Only One,' the third single from the new album, GHOSTS IN THE GARDEN (3/7), and if you want to see whole thing – and it really only makes sense if you watch it from beginning to end – head over to her page. While you're there, pre-order the new record, and get some tickets to her spring 2025 tours across the USA with her ace band. Buy them a drink, and tell them I sent you.
