Here now is the second song offering from ANIMAL POEM, the new album coming to you Aug 29th on @fluffandgravyrecords . WHITE GOOSE is out TODAY everywhere you do your listening. It’s a tender bit of gratitude for the way the natural world shows us how to live, shapes our understanding – of love, loss, truth and meaning. It was the first song written in the creative cycle that became the record and one that lives deep at the heart of its lyrical intention. I read ‘Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,’ by Annie Dillard, that vivid and cacophonous year long study of a small patch of backyard wilderness. It floored me with its raw, devotional attention, left me transfixed by leaf decomposition, root tangle, and bug sex. Wrote this song in the aftermath. For a long time I’ve been drawn to the work of @rylandbouchard , a filmmaker/photographer/musician/brilliant artist with the same vital loving attention to the natural world that so moved me in Annie Dillard’s writing. We talked back and forth over the years and he generously agreed to make a video to accompany White Goose. I kind of still can’t believe this really happened. His work means so much to me, constantly reminds me to slow down, look closer, be still and present. Ryland went to the woods near his house with @anastasiiaduvallie , an incredible NY based photographer who agreed to be filmed for the project. She moved with such grace and thoughtfulness through the misty fern beds and Ryland captured every bit of depth and slow wonder on 16mm film. It’s an absolute honor to have their art accompany this song. One brand new record coming to you August 29th on my beloved @fluffandgravyrecords . It goes by ANIMAL POEM. Here now is the title track as imagined through unloosed body moves in an old empty theater, slow motion captured by my soul friend @buntonhollow . A note about the album — Here we are. Mysterious humanity unfolding. Animal nature howling. How do we learn what it means? Maybe being here is a story told by all of us at once, a constant reaching for language, an impossible telling of something inherently indescribable. Animal Poem is a meditation on the attempt. How do we talk about destiny from the balcony of a nation in decline? How does our attention shape the way we touch the natural world? In the face of endless avarice and cruelty, how do we talk about the realness of love?  It’s hard to know how to hold a creative life in a time that feels fraught with venomous division, careening technological advance, and an ever widening chasm between the affluent and the dispossessed. What good are poems when affordable housing is scarce, the climate teeters on a dangerous edge, and war breaks out over misinformation spread by profit hungry algorithms? I think about being here. How brief it is. How incomplete our understanding. I think about history. All the worlds we’ve created and broken. Revolution and renaissance. Hope and humility. Everyone here is living a creative life – teachers and parents, kids and convenience store clerks. We’re all tasting this wild existence, finding ways to express how much it hurts and moves us. This work is my own small addition to that communal story. The water we swim in. The way our attention molds our truths. Humanity is unfolding as we describe it. We’ll never get it right, but the attempt is everything.
