In Japan, the art of shibori - from shiboru, “to wring or press” - has been practiced for over a thousand years. Among its many forms, itajime shibori stands apart for its quiet precision. Cloth is folded like origami, clamped between carved wooden boards, and dipped into vats of indigo dye. The result: mirrored patterns that balance control and chance, geometry and the organic imperfection of the handmade.
Born in the textile towns of Arimatsu and Narumi during the Edo period, itajime was once used to adorn fine silks and cottons - kimono linings, ceremonial robes, everyday garments touched with subtle restraint. Indigo, with its deep protective hue, carried both aesthetic and symbolic weight, believed to guard against insects and misfortune. In our studio, this ancient Japanese discipline meets Indian handcraft. Our artisans, masters long practiced in bandhani and leheriya, now fold and press silk in the itajime way - guided by techniques learned from Japanese masters. Each piece emerges as a conversation between two traditions: Japanese geometry, Indian joy. In every fold and release, the pattern reveals what cannot be planned: an art that remains, at heart, a meditation on the questions of perfection and precision.
