PLAY PLAY PLAY
William Klein
Opened early June and still on till January 5, 2025
Curated and designed for MAC Montelimar
A 5th retrospective I curated about William Klein's work after
@centrephotographique Rouen Normandy, Fundacion Telefonica, Madrid, La Pedrera, Barcelona and museum Hanmi in Seoul, yet a completely different one.
Bringing together vintage prints, large-format prints, books, film extracts, and some unseen archive documents, the exhibition presents Klein as painter, photographer and filmmaker.
William Klein was born in 1926, one hundred years after the invention of photography. From the 1920s to the 21st century, from the first compact camera in the 1920s to the small flat rectangle in our pockets a hundred years later, still and moving images have been marked by a succession of inventions designed to make them ever more accessible. From the outset, photography and cinema have had their destinies linked to technical progress, to the industry that supports them and thus to the ambition to reach the masses. It is precisely this ambivalent nature of the image, caught between art and mass media, cet art des foules, that William Klein, by examining all its springs, will never cease to summon up in his work. At a time of alternative realities, deep fakes and creations derived from artificial intelligence, the persistence of the contemporary character of Klein's work is striking.
PLAY PLAY PLAY invites us to follow the artist through the artistic, media and political terrain he has explored over the past fifty years, and in which he has constantly challenged modes of representation.
The heady, incantatory title of the exhibition seems to be borrowed from the language of advertising, which he has so often observed, photographed and mocked.
Play is the common thread running through the many chapters of the exhibition: play with artistic media, play with passers-by, play with the photographic machine, play with sport soon joined by the political fight with the evocation of Muhammad Ali and Mr Freedom, play with conventions.
Rien de plus sérieux que tous ces jeux irrévérencieux.
