Brittney Griner was sentenced to 9 years of prison in Russia today. She did not need to go. The NBA could have taken better care of her and her colleagues in the WNBA. A minimal amount of research brought me some alarming findings:
The total salary for all 12 WNBA teams COMBINED is $16,583,080. There are 87 NBA players who make more than that.
The highest total salary for any WNBA team is $1,427,670. There are 471 NBA players earning more than that next year. If you Google the number of NBA players the estimate is 450…
I do not care to hear about the economics of the WNBA, but clearly with NBA players’ contracts experiencing drastic increases over the last few years, the NBA can certainly do much better.
I was teaching 7th graders this year, and many of them aspire to play in the WNBA. I truly hope the players can enjoy a better quality of life by then, and I pray for the safe return of Brittney 🙏🏽🙏🏽 #nba #wnba #freebg
