Curated by Isabella Hone-Saunders and Paul BoyĆ© at MADA Gallery, ā€˜Inter-narratives of hope: building catastrophe resilience’ moves between scale and proximity. Dense surfaces absorb you, then smaller gestures interrupt: a plant, a bag, a voice — forming an unstable system of conditions. Climate catastrophe underpins the exhibition alongside a quieter question: how life continues within damage. Paintings by Susan Norrie rise vertically, almost bodily. First they read as fields; but up close they fracture — pitted, porous, textured with formations resembling coral, growth, infection. Joshua Petherick’s ā€˜Condolence’ sculptures rupture the gallery itself. Massive screw-like forms force through the wall, cracking plaster, asserting weight and intrusion. They sit between tool and weapon — extraction made spatial, immediate. Polly Boland’s portrait of ā€˜Sir Robert May, Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government’ presents him against patterned red, holding a stuffed thylacine. Extinction is held calmly, framed as object. Science appears not as solution, but as witness — or something arriving too late. Rory Pilgrim’s red and blue plastic bags, ā€˜Tomorrow in your hands’ and ā€˜Government lover’, lie on the ground. Their language gestures toward governance and control, but the material undercuts it — disposable, thin. In ā€˜Time Is the Fire in Which We Burn’ by Dani Marti, a man speaks from a bed, his face close enough to become a landscape — mouth, eyes, lines of age. Intimacy becomes attention rather than resolution. Wendy Hubert’s paintings assert continuity through colour and gesture: open yet grounded, a figure tending to a horse, land extending beyond the frame. Above and around, ā€˜Blue Marble’ by Holly Childs and Gediminas Žygus disperses a voice through the space — fragmented, searching. Strawberry and blueberry plants climb the wall in increments, each pot spaced like data points. Looking up at the ā€˜Whole Earth Catalog’ photocopy shifts the body too — neck craned, perspective altered. Hope is assembled and held in the friction between extraction and care, knowledge and loss, isolation and relation ✩ @mada_fine_art #luminosa #luminosaartsscene #madagallery

My first 100 days @nestruimte are a wrap.. ! It’s been such a warm welcome by the city, its artists, art institutes, clubs and of course the team! What made it even more special is the return to the DCR @dcr_denhaag with the opening of an exhibition curated by @philipp.gufler Philipp and I first met in 2015 when he was an artist in residence at De Ateliers. Soon after we hosted Bei Cosy at rongwrong, a queer bar, a speak easy dedicated to @cosypiero .. Ever since we’ve continued to collaborate and you can imagine the joy when I heard that Urning & Urningin curated by Philipp (upon invitation by the one and only @hesketencate and with all the support of @eva_burgering ) would be the first exhibition I got to open. It has been wonderful seeing all the artists come together @louwrienwijers @rainbowsofgorse @sharanbala @cosypiero @elielielihill @caconrad88 and @sophieserber to honour the legacy of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs and to celebrate queer love and desire! Tomorrow is the last day already so make sure not to miss it! šŸ“ø @gingerhorn

hello, we made a cute catalogue ~ biggest thanks to audrey jo pfister for their essay, dennis grauel for his design, stray pages for the beautiful riso printing and to creative australia for the funds to produce this first of two publications ~ join us for the opening of ā€˜inter-narratives of hope: building catastrophe resilience’ next thursday 6–8pm at MADA gallery, caulfield How does hope confront the denial of the future? The ā€˜inter-narrative’ functions here as a navigational tool for approaching hope, a virtual idea that floats and haunts above us in the everyday of crisis. As a methodology, the inter-narrative refuses to be flattened into a single story; instead, it creates an arrangement of materially and geographically distinct experiences that act as anchors. This intentional commitment drives the formation of the many inter-narratives within this exhibition: human and non-human stories of tender dependence, visual parallels of environmental crisis, extractivism, and utopia. In a void of footholds, hope confronts the denial of the future. Whether foreclosed by climate collapse, monstrous capitalism, or the erasure of marginalised life, hope cannot be a speculative investment in a ā€˜later’ that may never arrive. In this exhibition, hope is active because it is foundational; it is the infrastructure of resistance that allows us to act despite the lack of a guaranteed outcome. If capitalism denies us a future, hope responds by reclaiming the integrity of the now. By disrupting system breakdown through a constellation of images, people, and symbols, we attempt to collapse the distance between art and solidarity. When we speak of building catastrophe resistance, we are speaking of the way we work together as curators and artists. This is a commitment to a ā€˜near horizon’ where the work is the sustenance. We offer these inter-narratives not as a promised solution, but as a disciplined methodology for navigating the everyday of crisis. Dani Marti, Holly Childs + Gediminas Žygus, Joshua Petherick, Polly Borland, Rory Pilgrim, Susan Norrie, Wendy Hubert Isabella Hone-Saunders and Paul BoyĆ© ~ MADA Curators-in-Residence
