Anemoi, the first interactive air monitoring station in the Netherlands was completed this summer in Amsterdam 🎉
The project provides real-time information about local air pollution levels by integrating architecture and data visualization into public space. It makes scientific information about air quality more accessible, aiming to raise awareness and enrich public debate with both factual data and artistic imagination.
The prototype, located on the Nieuwendammerdijk in Amsterdam-Noord, is named after the wind gods of classical antiquity: the Anemoi. Inspired by the surrounding dike architecture and the Tower of the Winds in Athens, the design combines classical and contextual references into contemporary, site-specific architecture.
The design is envisioned as a clear and recognizable typology for air quality stations, adaptable to different contexts and scalable for future expansion of the network. The opening of Anemoi marks a milestone in the replacement of outdated air monitoring stations in the Netherlands.
