Depathologization and Media Visibility of LGBTI+ Communities in China
In 2025, only 15.3% of LGBTI+-related coverage in mainland Chinese print media was positive.
This public event brings together a talk on the unfinished process of depathologization of homosexuality in China and the launch of the China Rainbow Media Monitoring Report 2025, which examines how LGBTI+ issues are represented—or increasingly silenced—in public media.
Although homosexuality was widely said to have been “removed” from China’s classification of mental disorders in 2001, medical practice, education, and institutional responses have remained ambiguous. At the same time, rights‑based narratives have largely disappeared from mainstream reporting, giving way to silence, self‑censorship, and risk‑avoidance.
By linking medical history with media analysis, this event explores how visibility is constrained and negotiated today, and why LGBTI+ visibility remains a critical human‑rights issue in contemporary China. 5 May 2026

45 mins
On the 17th birthday of transgender girl Huang Xiaodi, the whole family gathered to celebrate her birthday. After dinner, her parents asked her to get in the car to take her to buy a birthday present. However, what awaited her was not the store, but an “Internet addiction school” on Gele Mountain in Chongqing. They believed that this would convert Xiaodi into a “normal” boy. Trapped in a “private prison”, Xiaodi learns to give in. In the face of violence and humiliation, she suffers disgrace to win the trust of the instructors. With patience, a chance to escape finally comes.
Correct Me If I’m Wrong 如你所愿・Hao Zhou ・23 min・2025
In a struggle of love, legacy, and belief, a southwest Chinese family tries to purge an unwanted entity from their queer heir.
Artist Wu Laobai traveled through the streets of different cities in three red trucks adorned with signs protesting conversion therapy, visiting various conversion therapy facilities along the way. The film documents the problems encountered by the three red trucks during their journey, and includes the views of some psychiatrists on conversion therapy. The film also shows us the way artists work when confronted with a public issue: when connection becomes a possibility, will it bring about more change?

About the documentary:
TwoMoms (2025) follows four female same-sex couples in Japan as they build their families through assisted reproductive technology. Attuning to the societal discrimination and legal challenges faced by each couple, the film portrays not only the common joys and struggles of becoming parents but also the additional trials of being an LGBTQ+ family in modern Japan. Shot by a lesbian mother who is navigating her own journey through parenthood, the documentary invites the audience to explore and reflect on the hidden diversity of families within Japanese society.

Since December 28, people across Iran have risen up to protest economic collapse, repression, and the systematic control of their lives and bodies. They have been met with bloody crackdowns — arrests, violence, and killings carried out by the state.
Despite censorship and internet shutdowns, Iranian communities are mobilizing, both inside and outside the country, to share information and protect one another.
This is a moment for mutual aid and solidarity. Silence is not neutral.
Please pay attention, share verified information, and amplify Iranian voices. Let people in Iran know they are not alone.
Attention is care. Care is solidarity.
