🚨 New Campaign: Women for Trans Rights 🚨
Ahead of Trans Day of Visibility 🏳️⚧️, we are speaking up as feminists ♀️ to make clear that we reject any attempt to frame trans inclusion as a threat to women.
Trans people are our neighbours and our siblings. We have a shared struggle against injustice
and inequality.
Those who seek to attack trans rights in the name of women do not speak for us. These attacks are an attempt to turn attention away from the true sources of violence against women: patriarchy, and the systems and structures that uphold it.
We know that when women, girls and trans people unite, we are unstoppable. Together, we
are putting the focus back where it belongs: On the patriarchy, and the politicians that uphold it.
We reject any attempt to strip away rights from our trans neighbours.
We reject any attempt to pit women and trans people against each other.
We are united, and we won’t stop speaking up for freedom and human rights.

Spoke with Canadian Press about the significance of the International Day Against Homophobia, Bipohiba and Transphobia. I urged the Prime Minister to show queer Canadians he will uphold and defend our rights, spoke about the danger of polarization and invited Canadians with questions about transgender issues to join us for one of our "Ask a trans person anything" events taking place across Canada throughout the summer.
On March 30th, Queer Momentum, @transaction.ab and @amnestycanada supported parents of trans youth in Alberta to bring their voices forward on the steps of the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton.
These parents shared stories that will break your heart, highlighting the harm of premier @abdaniellesmith 's policies on their children and their families.
These parents came forward with two calls to action for Premier Smith. First, they asked for a meeting, so they could share their concerns directly with her. Second, they called for the restoration of their children's charter-protected rights.
Unfortunately, their calls went unanswered. The premier ignored them, even after their requests were echoed in the legislature by MLA Janice Irwin.

The truth is, trans people have been maligned, branded as (dangerous) ideological extremists pushing weird agendas in schools and other institutions. The whole conversation has become polarized and poisonous, making it all the more difficult to find common ground.
That's why we are trying out a new approach. People have questions and they deserve answers, so @karla.marx1917 and I are putting ourselves in the hot seat for live "Ask a Trans Person Anything" events across Canada.
Send us your uncle who doesnt get it, your neighbour whose worried about what their kid is learning at school. We'll give them space to bring their concerns forward.
Our hot take? Most people will agree with us, if we put the internet aside and have real dialogue.

Yesterday, MLA Petrovic introduced a petition not yet publicly available, that will seek to create cisgender only washroom facilities and discriminate access based on sex.
When we know more, you will know more. This somehow has not made it into the public eye although it was introduced yesterday. If this petition is successful, albertans will continue to lose human rights.
On March 30th, parents of trans youth gathered at the Alberta Legislature to share their stories amd ask Premier Smith to meet with them. Why? So she could understand the harm her policies have caused to their kids and their families.
Premier Smith ignored them. When MLA @janis.irwin echoed the parents' request in the Legislature, the Premier dodged the question.
Now, 3 of these courageous parents have written an opinion piece in the Calgary Herald, once more calling for a meeting. All they want is the have their voices and stories heard.

In January, we announced a new micro-grant aimed at powering up trans and queer advocacy in Alberta. Now, we are so excited to share more about the twelve projects we are supporting!
From community gatherings to protest planning, educational events to healing opportunities, these initiatives are all about strengthening the grassroots movement.
