I was NOT going to miss pro XCC at @usacycling Endurance Nationals. We planned this race for more than a year and while it missed some of the character we planned the character came in the people. I’m literally allergic to short course racing, I’m a long doggie. A week into heavy legs of production didn’t matter, this was destiny between the tape. Last row call up but fresh @shimanomtb XTR di2 loaded up, the Scalpel HT and I were willing to rip!! It must be what Tadej feels like on the climbs. Wall of noise. Energy coming from the crowd. And a sensation I’m not sure I’ll ever feel more profoundly. That was pretty amazing. And I beat my call up and fellas with fresh legs; so… that was pretty cool. So that’s some amazing snaps from @drewbykes . Some amazing crowd by @visitvbr and @roanoke_outside . And some dead on killer bike by @cannondalemountain , @industry_nine , @shimanomtb , and @blueridgecyclery .

@theappalachianjourney is a pretty radical bike party. We built it to be equal parts sharp nosed bike race, challenging personal triumph, and universally enriching experience that shares the love. It might not need to be said that my experience is a little bit different than everyone else’s, what with the responsibilities of making many aspects of it happen, but it nevertheless turned out to be just those same things for me! Pointy nosed bike race - yep! A course that challenged every single rider, without a doubt. It showed off the many value I love about Appalachian dirt. Personal triumph - absolutely. Sharing our home dirt with 550 buddies was a big deal. And we saw huge days, major personal breakthroughs, and partners aid each other to arrive at the finish #bettertogether. Enriching - oh and HOW! We couldn’t have been surrounded by a better pack of riders all weekend. I am so thankful to the volunteers and staff who make it happen, thankful to @visitfloydva and @visitvbr who aid us in sharing the love of these mountains, and thankful to the many participants who bring their best and show up for each other in ways large or small. Been spending a lot of solo time lately. And a person who keeps coming to mind is Papa T, Rick Tevendale. Our community lost Rick recently and I feel deeply for his family. While Rick and I weren’t as close as his sons and I certainly are, it’s a big hole in the heart. The Tevendale family have been incredible supporters and friends of Emily and I since @blueridgecyclery came on to the scene, if not a bit before. To know the sons is perhaps to know the father. At least in the characteristics I know Rick to have had. The solo time with him on my mind has given me a lot of time to pause and be grateful for the guy Rick was. He was tough and didn’t give an inch, but that’s because if he knew you he’d go a mile for you. And that kindness and devotion is so so strong in the people he leaves behind and the spirit they carry. His frankness and dependability are what we need more of. Speaking plainly our beliefs, but also advocating for each other. So in my quiet moments lately I’ve been thinking a lot about Rick, Shawn, Dave, and of course Mama T. The Goof Troop goes to Utah. Saint George UT is a special spot. Red rocks, big drops, and riding that engages your mind like few other places. After winning the pro men’s 100 in near record time last year, it felt right to join 50 or so of my dumbest friends in racing singlespeed on the red rocks. Thanks to @dirtwiretv we had a proper gathering and while we spent far too much time looking at bikes not riding them, even that was pretty fun. Singlespeed is a tribe. A weird tribe. A hairy tribe. But a tribe that does ultimately deeply care for each other, if not their livers. Some big days in Santa Clara, Gooseberry, and a big dumb trail run with @redbeard_mtb ruined my body but filled my soul. What happens when you hand an action camera to a man who regularly shuns gears on a mountain bike? Well I was surprised. I've answered a lot of Qs about the camera I've been using. So here is a full on video showing off some of my favorite features of the @insta360 Go Ultra camera I've been using. Minus the bike footage because we live in the Tundra. I love the pendant mount and magnetic backing of the Go Ultra. It opens up a ton of doors for cool angles. Its also incredibly user friendly, I dont need to learn about cameras just how to press the touch screen. Its also super light and small in its camera only form. Expect more videos from me! @emyhairfield and I took a trip. We bucked the usual "go to the desert for training volume" I see too much and instead hit the Deep South. A little culture, some coastline, and an awful lot of Creole seasoning. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and even a bit of Florida. We learned a ton about the Civil Rights movement, WWII history, and why New Orleans is Spooky Central. Or maybe that was just the bogo Hurricanes. I ate her weight in fried things from the sea, we pedaled our bikes some, and moreover we spent time together.
