Calling all Boston teens! 📣 Join Puppet Showplace Theater at MFA Teen Sundays (@mfateens ) on Sunday, March 1, 2026 for Puppet Improv, a fun FREE workshop taught by veteran improviser, puppeteer, and our Resident Artist, Sarah Nolen of @puppetmotion !
At the beginning of the workshop, you’ll create your own “peepers” puppet — a simple set of expressive eyeballs that you can take home with you! Then, we’ll dive into participatory games and a crash course in hand-and-rod “Muppet-style” puppet manipulation to get everyone moving and creating right away. We’ll learn idea-generation skills and scene-building techniques in pursuit of our ultimate mission: to create amazing puppet sketches and zany solo performances with zero scripting or prior preparation. Along the way, we'll discover the outrageous possibilities of puppetry.

Meet a bunny with boundless energy, a sloth with social anxiety, a hedgehog wrestling with wrapping, and a skunk who’s trying to keep everything cool and under control. Through song, dance, and original rock ‘n’ roll music by Phil Berman (@philandtheflyingleap ), these little stars discover that music can be an exuberant and healthy way to express their inner selves.

Filmmaker and puppeteer, Sarah Nolen of @puppetmotion , is one of the featured artists at Puppets in Paradise 2025. She will bring her fun storytelling show called Party Animals, featuring an array of furry friends that have their own names and eclectic character traits. Sarah is an MFA graduate known nationally for her versatile, witty, and innovative work across multiple puppetry styles. In 2015, Sarah received the Mister Rogers Memorial Scholarship in support of her television pilot Treeples, a show geared towards empowering girls, which screened at film festivals across the U.S.

I've been a part of the Insights team since 2017, when I met Dr. McClowry for a puppet consult. The classroom puppets she was using were difficult for teachers to use. I tried one on and it was tough trying to close the mouth!

My job was to redesign the puppet patterns, streamline costumes, and build sets of these four friends.

We started out with 5 sets in 2017, and I produced these from my studio in Waltham for the next five or so years.

It was great to be able to have the work, and also hire local puppeteer friends. @honeygoodenough helped me get that first order out the door in early 2018!

That was the sweet exclamation from the audience during one performance of “Party Animals” by Sarah Nolen of @puppetmotion (and the resident artist of Puppet Showplace!), during the show’s premiere run on June 7 - 15.
Blending hand puppetry and original rock ‘n’ roll music composed by Phil Berman (@philandtheflyingleap ), “Party Animals” tells the story of five furry friends as they prepare to throw a birthday party. When things start to go awry, original music and teamwork help the birthday crew get “back on track.”
“Each character handles their tantrums, distractions, and nerves with music, song, and dance,” shared Sarah. “I hope that the show reminds folks to seek out music next time they feel off — when you’re in a funk, listen to some funk!”
