Silver surface Stephen Coates and James Hunter designed the catalogue for the exhibition Unearthed: Photography’s Roots at London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery. For the interiors they used traditional lithography, but the cover was printed digitally on Sirio Pearl Platinum board using an HP Indigo press at Pureprint in Uckfield, England. The cover features a detail from Large Poppies, a photograph by Richard Learoyd, and given the metallic board, achieving accurate colour was a challenge. To compensate, they used five layers of ink, four process colours plus white, carefully integrated in the separations. Coates explains that white ink was printed first, acting both as a base for the colour inks and as solid typography. Interestingly, they applied white in four passes (“hits”) to build depth; these layers were accumulated within the press and then transferred to the board. Their choice to print digitally for the cover enabled easier proofing on the same press as the final run. After two proofs and on-press colour tweaks, they achieved the desired result. Doing this via lithography (with wet proofs) would have been prohibitively costly. @stephen.coates @jameshuntereu @fedrigoni.paper @studiohunter_ @pureprintgroup @dulwichgallery Want to know more? Unexpected vinyl art British designer Patrick Fry runs CentreCentre, a publishing house that creates limited-edition books on unusual and overlooked topics. His projects celebrate the “unexpected,” from Brick Index—a photo collection of single bricks—to Print Punch, which documents punch cards once used for mainframe computers, including rare Italian-made “Arcoschede.” Other titles include Reverses, made with London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, showing the backs of works on paper, and To Evelyn, a collection of entertainers’ posters from a Yorkshire mining village. The newest book, Sleeve Notes, showcases music fan art discovered in Crazy Beat Records in Upminster. Artist Dominique Russell photographed decorated vinyl sleeves filled with doodles, collages, portraits, and typewriter-like art. The shop owner, Kevan Russell, explains that many sleeves exist because the originals were lost or damaged. Each CentreCentre book has a distinctive design, using tactile papers and carefully chosen materials such as Sirio, Woodstock, and Materica. @dominiquerussellprojects @fedrigoni.paper @centrecentrebooks @patrickfrystudio Want to know more? Read more at Pulp Digital! In Mr Kitching’s footsteps In Mr Kitching’s Footsteps traces the letterpress revival in Madrid, spotlighting three emerging designers (Theo Hersey, Michelle Dwyer, and Christian Granados) guided by their mentor Alan Kitching. Hosted at GRAGRA (GráficasGranados), a cultural hub founded in 2023 by Granados in Madrid, the exhibition titled London’s Building Blocksran from March to June 2025. Curated by journalist Andrés Oliva, the event featured a busy opening, a hands‑on workshop where participants created a limited‑edition publication, and showcased works by all four artists. Christian Granados, who collaborated with Kitching and Kelvyn Smith in London, now leads GRAGRA and teaches at the Istituto Europeo di Design(IED). Theo Hersey runs The Typography Workshop in South London, inheriting valuable wood and metal type stocks from Kitching in 2023. Michelle Dwyer, a New Yorker based in London, directs her studio Nice & Graphic and assists Kitching personally. Her standout piece, The British Tongue, is a playful letterpress poster series featuring quirky English phrases like « Well chuffed » and »faffing about », printed using a Vandercook SP15 press on Fedrigoni Arena Rough 200 gsm paper. Alan Kitching’s own contributions to the exhibition included his typographic maps of London, a poster for Hamlet, and his signature Broadside panels—pieces well known to Pulp readers. The show celebrated the tactile craft of letterpress in a contemporary context, bridging generations in typographic artistry. @graficas.granados @chr_gra @theohersey @niceandgraphic @alan_kitching_typography @fedrigoni.paper Want to know more? Drawing on nature Berlin-based art director Ariane Spanieris known for her bold, tactile approach to print. A passionate typography enthusiast, she studied at Weißensee Academy of Art and honed her craft at Stefan Sagmeister’s New York studio. In 2005, she founded Ariane Spanier Design, and has since become a key voice in the cultural design landscape. Spanier has long collaborated on Fukt, a drawing-focused magazine founded in 1999 by her partner Björn Hegardt. The magazine, often referred to as a »bookazine » for its hybrid format, explores a different theme each year through an international selection of artists. The newest edition, Fukt #22: The Nature Issue, investigates the deep connection between drawing and the natural world. It showcases artists who draw with and in nature — using snow, soil, fire, and organic processes. The issue also delves into ecological memory and environmental concerns. For the cover, Spanier transformed the physical object into an experience. Inspired by nature’s wild, multidimensional forms, she designed a layered, die-cut cover using Symbol Card Highline paper, shaped like leaves to invite interaction. Released in October 2024, the issue quickly sold out and was reprinted due to strong demand. @arianespanier @fukt_magazine @bjorn_hegardt @fedrigoni.paper Want to know more? As we exhale from the high note of Anamnesis, our 20th Anniversary celebration, I wanted to take a moment to simply say—thank you.   Anamnesis was a layered gathering in celebration of 20 years of Arithmetic, our female-founded design agency—dog-eared by our cover feature in the Italian magazine PULP, brought to life in partnership with Spicers. @pulpjournal_ is a design magazine, made for Fedrigoni Group by the Eye magazine team in five languages. Designed in the UK, produced in Italy, PULP celebrates the creative connection between people and paper.    Anamnesis—from the Greek, “the remembering”—is an ode to the forgotten wisdom within, the creative spark that transcends the ordinary, and the beauty found when we pause to listen inward. The evening unfolded as an immersive installation featuring sculptural, mermaid-inspired food by @salty_world_studios ephemeral object-based vignettes, ethereal sounds by @ninamendoza and deep connections. It was tactile, unexpected, and intimate. The intention for Anamnesis was to create a storied, transportive space where emotion leads, design becomes ritual, and where the impossible can be glimpsed—if only briefly. This evening marked something important for us—creatively, personally, and relationally. We’re stepping into a new chapter that’s only beginning to unfold. With deep gratitude, Margherita   Special heart filled thanks to @nalacare & @hellogoodjuju_ for donating their beautiful product to our gift bags, spicers for their generous sponsorship, @nathalee_paolinelli for her beautiful ceramic plates and to @whentheyfindus for documenting this special evening.

The floating world IWANT, a London design studio founded by John Gilsenan in 2003, became its own client by creating Ukiyo, a matcha tea brand launched in 2018. Featuring five curated blends plus a ceremonial grade, each tea is packaged in a brightly colored tin wrapped in textured Woodstock paper sleeves, ranging from soft greens to deep blues. Gilsenan designed the entire brand identity, including a custom typeface called Ukiyo Displace, which blends a strict Grotesk foundation with delicate details inspired by Japanese scripts. The name “Ukiyo,” meaning “floating world,” reflects a 17th-century Japanese concept of fleeting beauty and mindful living—a theme that runs throughout the design. Repurposing sturdy tins once used for industrial materials, Ukiyo offers a symbolic transformation into something pure and nourishing. The use of Woodstock paper adds a tactile, organic quality that aligns with the brand’s refined simplicity. Ukiyo has since found its way into premium retailers like Selfridges & Co and expanded across northern Europe and online. With more products in development, Gilsenan highlights that designing something truly “simple” often requires bold, precise choices. @fedrigoni.paper @iwantdesign Want to know more?
