Dulwich Mid-Century Oasis has won Architectural Travelogue of the Year at the Architectural Book Awards 2024! Printed in a metallic bronze, the cover features a map of modernist estates on the inside flap. Each estate is marked with a fluorescent orange spot, which can be seen through holes cut in the outer cover.

Stephen Coates and James Hunter designed the catalogue for the exhibition Unearthed: Photography’s Roots at London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery. For the interiors they used traditional lithography, but the cover was printed digitally on Sirio Pearl Platinum board using an HP Indigo press at Pureprint in Uckfield, England.
The cover features a detail from Large Poppies, a photograph by Richard Learoyd, and given the metallic board, achieving accurate colour was a challenge. To compensate, they used five layers of ink, four process colours plus white, carefully integrated in the separations.
Coates explains that white ink was printed first, acting both as a base for the colour inks and as solid typography. Interestingly, they applied white in four passes (“hits”) to build depth; these layers were accumulated within the press and then transferred to the board.
Their choice to print digitally for the cover enabled easier proofing on the same press as the final run. After two proofs and on-press colour tweaks, they achieved the desired result. Doing this via lithography (with wet proofs) would have been prohibitively costly.
